Anderson Tanoto

Anderson Tanoto is a member of the Board of Trustees at Tanoto Foundation International, an Indonesian non-profit philanthropic organization. Tanoto is the youngest son of businessman and philanthropist Sukanto Tanoto.[1][2][3] He received his education from University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.[1][4][5]

Career

After graduation, Tanoto became a consultant at Bain & Company focusing in consumer products and financial services.[4][5] While at Bain, he acquired expertise within Southeast Asia, working with clients in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.[4][5]

Now a Royal Golden Eagle director and Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Limited (APRIL) shareholder, Tanoto is currently involved in APRIL's fiber operations and business transformation on the lean manufacturing program.[2][6]

Tanoto provides strategic direction on the Riau Ecosystem Restoration project in Kampar, Sumatra, Indonesia.[3][7] He spends most of his time in APRIL's operation located in Kerinci, Riau Province, Indonesia.[2] He has received praise for his approach to growing the business efficiently and personally emphasizing the company's commitment to sustainability.[8]

In Dec 1, 2015, Tanoto announced APRIL's US$100 million investment in an expanded eco-restoration project in Riau, spanning 150,000 hectares.[9][10][11][12]

Tanoto was also involved in developing the Fire-Free Village Programme, which launched July 2015 and involved cultivating and incentivizing villages in Riau to adopt fire prevention practices.[13][14][15]

Philanthropy

Apart from his business interests, Tanoto also works in community development and philanthropy.[1] He is actively involved in the Tanoto Foundation, which was founded in 1981 by the Tanoto family to reduce poverty through education and empowerment.[1][16][17]

As a member of the Board of Trustees of Tanoto Foundation, Tanoto drives various foundation initiatives focusing on the future generation of Indonesia.[18][19][20][21]

He initiated a seed funding program for Tanoto Foundation scholars to promote entrepreneurship as well as actively participates in the Tanoto Entrepreneurship Series (TES) where prominent speakers such as Jusuf Kalla (Indonesia's former Vice President)[22][23] and Joko Widodo (then Governor DKI Jakarta)[24][25] have spoken to the students and scholars of Tanoto Foundation.[4][26] He believes that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in forming a dynamic emerging economy.[26]
