Andrea Böhmert is a German venture capital investor and entrepreneur based in South Africa. She is known for founding the R350m Hasso Plattner Ventures Africa Fund, then one of the largest venture capital funds in Southern Africa. She also previously founded Cape Venture Partners and is currently Managing Partner of Knife Capital VC firm, on the board of directors of African Dawn Capital, founding partner of YueDiligence and founder of the Grindstone accelerator programme. Education and Early Career
Böhmert was born and grew up in Germany, where she earned a masters degree in management of technology and innovation. After the apartheid fell in 1994 she moved to Johannesburg where she worked for Siemens; she subsequently headed the Corporate Strategy division for Southern Africa. She then had management positions at Dimension Data.[2][3] Böhmert earned an MBA from Henley Business School in the UK.[4]
Ventures
Andrea Böhmert co-founded Cape Venture Partners in 2004; in 2008 she founded and raised the R350m Hasso Plattner Ventures Africa Fund backed by the German billionaire businessman and co-founder of SAP AG.[3] In 2011 she became partner of Knife Capital, which was founded from the HBD venture portfolio of South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth. In 2013 Knife Capital led by Böhmert started the Grindstone accelerator programme and in 2014 she joined the board of directors of JSE-listed African Dawn Capital, which acquired Knife Capital in a reverse takeover in 2013,[5] before going on to co-found YueDiligence in 2015.[4] Böhmert is also a director of Wesgro and involved in numerous entrepreneurial eco-system initiatives.
Personal Life
Böhmert is married with two children.[2] She is also heavily involved in the advancing entrepreneurship ecosystem in Africa and has been as director or mentor in a number of projects including AngelHub, The Bandwidth Barn Incubator, the Silicon Cape Initiative and as Angel Investor in the Google Umbono Program. Other initiatives include judging the Global Innovation Competition in Barcelona, mentoring and judging IBM SmartCamp in Silicon Valley, Barcelona and Cape Town and Seedcamp.
