Andrew Cho, born May 7, 1990, is an American born Taiwanese songwriter, DJ, producer, and musician.
He was the youngest member of the Taiwanese hip-hop group Machi. While in Machi, he released three studio albums with the group, along with his debut album, "Oh My!".
Since then, he has written songs for numerous artists including Vanness Wu, Nicky Lee, and also fully composed and produced an EP for Steven Lin entitled "War" in 2007. He had also created a video games ecommerce site that same year.
He graduated at age 17 from high school in 2008, and is currently studying, producing, and DJing electronic music. He frequently uploads new music and remixes to his Youtube channel.
Early life
Andrew was born on May 7, 1990, in Irvine, California. He grew up in Newport Beach, California, living with his brother, sister, and parents. His father, Allen Chou, is a family doctor, while his mother is a homemaker.
From age 5, Andrew was given piano and violin lessons. As he grew up, he picked up the guitar along with the drums. On the advice of his cousin Jeff Huang, and producer Jae Chong, he began to produce music as well.
2003-06: Career beginnings and Machi
In 2002, while visiting his cousin Jeff Huang, who was then forming the group Machi, Andrew performed a rap for him that he had learned while watching television. Impressed, Jeff asked Andrew to write a song to perform in an upcoming talent competition. Aged 12, Andrew performed 2 original rock tracks for a competition hosted by Warner Music. After placing third, he continued to write music, and along with his brother, Kenny Chou, he released his debut album with his group, Machi, a year later. His song, "Machi Didi", which featured Andrew rapping in reverse, was a promoted single, while the album itself reached platinum status in Taiwan.
In 2004, Machi released their second studio album, with Andrew's rap on the title track "爽 (Feel Good)". Later that year, he released his first solo album entitled "Oh My!". During this time, Andrew was still attending high school in California, which interfered with the amount of time he was able to spend on his music.
After deciding to move to Taiwan 2005, in order to be closer and have more time to spend on his career, Machi released their third and final album, Superman (超人). While in Taiwan, he attended Taipei American School.
Once promotion of the album finished, Andrew went to Beijing, China, for several months, to film a basketball movie, entitled "Slam", directed by Jonathan Lim. The movie won 2008 Worldfest Houston's Gold Award for "Best Film".[1]
2007-09: eCommerce Website, War EP, and College
After the release of Superman, in 2007, Andrew switched into country music, and collaborated with Vanness Wu in his album V.DUBB on the track "Eternity". He had also been working on his second studio album, which was not released.
Later on that year, he took an interest in websites and ecommerce, and built a successful video game sales website. He briefly moved back to California to manage his new company, before deciding to sell the website's domains in 2008, in order shift his focus back to music. In total he sold 4 domains for approximately $50,000 USD.
During that time in America, he also collaborated with Steven Lin to produce the EP "War". The album was popular at karaoke bars and can be found at the many popular karaoke bars across Taiwan.
Once he returned to Taiwan, he co-wrote and produced the track "Forever" with Chris Wiebe for Golden Melody Award winner Nicky Lee's album "Imperfect".
In 2009, he took a short break from music to return to his studies and college. However, after deciding that music was his passion, he began to focus again on producing music, improving his sound and producing skills.
2010-Present
Andrew left California before completing his college degree, and is currently living in New York City, studying at electronic music production and DJ school, Dubspot. He has changed his musical style to focus completely on electronic dance music (EDM). He frequently releases new DJ mixes and remixes on his Youtube channel.
