Anmol Malik is a playback singer and songwriter in the Indian Film Industry. She is the daughter of music director Anu Malik.
Early life
Anmol Malik, born 5 February, to Anju and Anu Malik is the older of two children. Her younger sister is Ada Malik. Her great uncle is the popular yesteryears lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri, and her grandfather is the talented music director Sardar Malik.
Education
Anmol Malik sat for her International GCSEs at the École Mondiale World School, Mumbai. She completed her International Baccalaureate from the Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai. Anmol currently holds a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Warwick, England, a premier educational institution. She graduated in Business, Film, and Computer Science. She has also completed a year at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, California, as a scholarship student. Anmol has completed grades 1-5 in Music Theory [Piano] from the Trinity College London
Career
Singer
A constant attendee at her father's pitching and recording sessions, Anmol has closely followed her father's work since the age of five. She began learning how to play the piano at the age of 7, and can also play the harmonium (her father's favoured musical instrument.) Anmol was formally trained in Hindustani Classical music by her grandfather, the renowned Sardar Malik, but claims her primary vocal education came from informal practice and sheer observation of professional singers during their various recording sessions, taking tips and trying to match their vocal range. She is self trained in Western Classical music, and can also sing in French, Spanish, and Persian. Due to this training her vocal range reflects versatility. While her Hindi hits have been party numbers, her Western singing is often compared to the vocal tone of Norah Jones.
She began her singing career at the age of 7 in the movie Diljale. This was followed by an entire track sung by her at the age of eight in the David Dhawan-Vashu Bhagnani super hit film Biwi No.1.[1] She lent her voice as a child singer to the Aamir Khan starrer Mela in the same year.
The rawness and innocence in her voice prompted director J.P.Dutta ( Border, LOC Kargil, Refugee) to cast her as the singer for lead actress Aishwariya Rai in the movie Umrao Jaan, a poignant story about a naive courtesan. The song titled Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Na Kijo (Please don't let me be a daughter in my next birth) resounded deeply with the Indian public and was even used for a popular Indian television show on Zee TV.
Her next release was the song Chal Mera Hath Pakad Le from the Satish Kaushik movie Teree Sang. The film was loosely based on the 2007 Academy Award winning movie Juno. During the film's pre-release the song generated a huge buzz after Anmol's impromptu live performance on the widely watched music reality show Indian Idol [2] (an Idol Franchise continuing from American Idol and UK Pop Idol), leading to several uploads on YouTube in search for the song.
After singing several romantic songs, Anmol took everyone by surprise by choosing to sing "Talli" from the movie Ugly Aur Pagli.[3] A heavy party song requiring robust Punjabi vocals and fusing grunge and rap. By technique Anmol was a misfit, but she surprised everyone by going against her standard training. The song was a smash hit before the release of the movie and debuted at the No.1 position and remained the top dance song for that year. The song opened the commercial side of Bollywood to her. When she sang the song she only 16.
Suno Suno from the Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran starrer Gali Gali Chor Hai is a soft love ballad. It was a duet with the top singer Mohit Chauhan. In the same year she sang Big Fat Indian Wedding from the movie Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai. In 2014, she sang 'Ek Mulaqat' from the movie Sonali Cable starring Ali Fazal and Rhea Chakraborty.[4] She also sang the Western Version of OLD SCHOOL GIRL[5] from the movie Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015. Recently she sang a song "Time Lagaya Kaiko" in Welcome Back with John Abraham recently.[6]
In October 2015, her first independent single, Lamhein , was released under EMI Records India. The music was recreated by her father, Anu Malik, and the lyrics were penned by Manoj Muntashir. A music video was also created, and was directed by Mohit Suri. The video stars Malik and Mohit Marwah. The video is supposed to depict a female singer's rise to fame and how it affects her relationship with her boyfriend. The song has already hit 4 million views on YouTube, and Malik is garnering a lot of positive feedback from the public and Bollywood celebrities.[7]
Songwriter
After her graduation from university, Anmol released the English single 'The Graduation'. The song has been composed, written and sung by her. It was an experimental release by India's premier Bollywood portal Bollywood Hungama and was only released online primarily because the theme of the song was offbeat. This is India's first song on such a theme and ceremony. The song did very well and drew ample praise and support from industry stars including actor Aamir Khan, directors Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Ayan Mukerji and Rohan Sippy.
