Storylines

Background

Little is known about Annalise's childhood, however, her mother, Ophelia Harkness (Cicely Tyson) in "Mama's Here Now", revealed information. As a child, Annalise grew up very poor, but her mother made sure she was fed, had a roof over her head and clothes on her back. As a child, Annalise was sexually abused by her uncle, Clyde. When one night, Ophelia caught Clyde exiting Annalise's room, knowing what he had done, she burned their house down while Clyde was asleep, presumably killing him.

While attending Harvard Law School, she became romantically involved with her classmate, Eve Rothlo (Famke Janssen). Ten years prior to the show's opening, she was pregnant, but her son died late in the pregnancy after a car crash presumably orchestrated by the father of one of her clients.

Season 1

The first season introduces Annalise Keating as an extremely successful Philadelphia defense attorney, representing several high-profile clients, and also as a widely revered criminal law professor at the fictional Middleton University.[3] It also reveals her unhealthy marriage with fellow Middleton professor Sam Keating and her romantic relationship with Detective Nate Lahey.[4]
