Annie Lapin (born 1978) is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. She is known for her energetic abstract paintings that are grounded in representation.[1]

Early life and education

Although born in Washington D.C., Lapin spent most of her early years in Kentucky.[2] She received her BA from Yale University in 2001. In 2004 she completed a post-baccalaureate program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is on the List of University of California, Los Angeles people where she received her MFA in 2007.[3]

Work

Her work has been described as "abstract imitations of realism"[4] and "loosely rendered collages of paint.".[5] Exploring the materiality of painting, she includes impasto brushstrokes and visual references to landscapes, human figures, graffiti, and historical works of art.[6]

Lapin's process of making paintings is intentionally visible in the works themselves. "The way the works are constructed," she says, "is to allow each painterly decision and mark to be left out there."[7]

Lapin has likened the viewer's interaction with her works to the moment between sleep and wakefulness, noting that the "experience of the constructed nature of one's own cognition which can occur when you view a painting is quite similar to either lucid dreaming or the moment of awareness of being awake after a dream."[7]

Exhibitions

Annie Lapin is represented by Honor Fraser gallery in Los Angeles, where she has had two solo shows: The Pure Space Animate (2011) and Various Peep Shows (2014). Lapin's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her solo museum exhibitions include Parallel Deliria Iteration at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (2009), History =ing at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (2012), and Annie Lapin: Falk Visiting Artist at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2013–14). Here work has also been included in exhibitions at venues in New York City, Houston, Mexico City, London, Naples, and Vienna.[8]
