Anthony Casalena (born April 24, 1982 in Baltimore, MD) is an entrepreneur, software developer, and designer living in New York City.[1] He is the founder and CEO of the website publishing platform Squarespace, which now employs more than 500 individuals across New York, Portland, and Dublin, Ireland.[2] He maintains active roles in the engineering, design, and product teams within Squarespace.[3][4][5][6][7]

Background

Casalena received his B.S. from the University of Maryland in 2005 in Computer Science, which is part of the University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences.[8] Previously, he attended Hereford High School in rural Maryland.[9]

Founding and efforts at Squarespace

In April 2003, Casalena started writing the initial version of Squarespace from his dorm room in the University of Maryland.[3][10] Casalena launched Squarespace in January 2004.[11] The initial funding for Squarespace came in the form of $30,000 in seed funding from his father.[12][13]

Soon after launching, Casalena won the 2004 University of Maryland Business Plan Competition, along with its $15,000 prize which served as additional capital for the company.[3][12]

In 2011, Anthony Casalena was named one of Crain's New York's Top Entrepreneurs of 2011.[13]

In January 2013, Anthony Casalena was named one of America's Most Promising CEOs Under 35 by Forbes.[14]

In June 2014, Anthony Casalena was named one of Inc.'s 35 Under 35 Coolest Entrepreneurs.[15]

In March 2016, Anthony Casalena was included in Crain's New York's Business Class of 40 Under 40. [16]
