Anthony Lopes (born 1 October 1990) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for French club Lyon as a goalkeeper.

He came through the youth ranks at Lyon, being called to the first team in September 2011 and making his debut in October 2012. He also played for the team in their defeat in the 2014 Coupe de la Ligue Final.

Born in France, Lopes represents Portugal at international level, having played for its under-19 and under-21 teams. He made his senior debut for the country on 31 March 2015.

Club career

Born in Givors, Lopes began his career at Lyon, being called up to the senior squad for the first time for a 31 Ligue 1 home win over Bordeaux on 24 September 2011, remaining an unused substitute with Rémy Vercoutre starting.[1] His only other call-up of the season came on 24 January 2012 against Lyon-Duchère in the round of 64 in the Coupe de France, again unused as Mathieu Valverde played in a 31 win.[2]

Lopes played his first match for Lyon on 31 October 2012, starting in the last 16 of the Coupe de la Ligue away to Nice in a 13 defeat at the Allianz Riviera.[3] He made his European debut on 6 December in a 2012–13 UEFA Europa League group match against Kiryat Shmona, playing the full 90 minutes in a 20 win at the Stade de Gerland which allowed the team to advance unbeaten into the knockout stages.[4] On 28 April he made his Ligue 1 debut in a 11 home draw against rivals Saint-Étienne in the Derby du Rhône; Lopes made an early close-range save from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but later conceded the first goal from a Kurt Zouma header.[5] This was the first of five league matches he played for the team at the end of the season, ending with a 20 home win over Rennes which saw Lyon finishing in third place and qualifying for the next season's UEFA Champions League.[6]

Lopes became Lyon's regular goalkeeper, playing 32 out of 38 games in the 2013–14 Ligue 1 season. He also featured in their run to the 2014 Coupe de la Ligue Final, where they lost 12 to Paris Saint-Germain in the decisive match at the Stade de France on 19 April.[7]

International career

Lopes represented Portugal at under-19 and under-21 level before receiving his first call up to the senior team in September 2013. He made his debut on 31 March 2015 in a 20 friendly defeat to Cape Verde at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota in Estoril.[8]
