Dr Anthony Joseph Lynham (born 12 April 1960) is an Australian oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Labor politician, and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland representing the electoral district of Stafford. He is currently the Queensland Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines.
Medical career
Lynham graduated in Dentistry from the University of Queensland (1982) and Medicine from the University of Newcastle (1993), before completing training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Queensland (1998). He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery). Following a fellowship visit to Switzerland, he gained a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the general stream. Upon returning to Australia, Lynham worked as a maxillofacial consultant and trauma team member at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and visiting medical officer at the Mater Private Hospital in Brisbane. He was also involved in maxillofacial training, and was a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland.[1]
Political career
Lynham was first elected on 19 July 2014 at the Stafford by-election, which resulted from the resignation of former member Chris Davis, defeating the LNP candidate Bob Andersen with a 62 percent two-party vote from a 19-point two-party-preferred swing.[2] Lynham then entered the Shadow Cabinet. [3] In 2015, Lynham spoke strongly in support of the expansion of Queensland's coal industry. Following the approval of the expansion of the Abbot Point coal terminal he told Sky News:
"We want to see the best coal, the most efficient coal, coal mined with the greatest environmental rigour. That is the coal we want to use as we move towards our renewable future."[4]
Palaszczuk government
On 16 February 2015, he was sworn in as Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines in the Palaszczuk Ministry.[5]
