Antonio Barreca (born 25 March 1995) is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a full back for Cagliari, on loan from Torino and the Italy national under-21 team.[1]
Club career
Born in Turin, Barreca grew up playing in the Torino youth system where he played for each youth category up to the Primavera.[2] In 2013–14, he led the Primavera to the finals of the Campionato Primavera, lost on penalties to Chievo.[3][4] Coinciding with Torino's injury problems that season he was regularly called up to the first team by Giampiero Ventura.[1]
In his first season as a professional, Barreca was sent on loan to Cittadella in Serie B.[1] He debuted in the third round of Coppa Italia, lost 4–1 to Sassuolo.[5] Barreca scored his first goal in Serie B on 15 November 2014 in a 5–2 away loss to Carpi.[6]
On 17 June 2015 he was loaned to Cagliari with a buyout clause and buy back clause in favour of Torino.[7]
International career
He made his debut with the shirt of the Italy under-20 on 6 January 2013 in a match valid for the Under-20 Four Nations Tournament lost 2–1 away against Poland. On 5 August 2015 he was called up to Italy under-21 by Luigi Di Biagio for the first friendly of the new biennium to be played on 12 August in Telki against Hungary.[8]
Style of play
He mainly covers the role of a left full-back, but is often used with good results as a winger: he has notable speed, crossing ability and a vision of the game.[9]
