April (Hangul: 에이프릴) is a K-pop girl group formed by DSP Media in 2015. The group's name means "girl you can't help but love" because "A" represents the best and "Pril" means a lovable girl. They debuted on August 24, 2015, with the mini-album Dreaming and the title track "Dream Candy".[1][2][3] The group is composed of five members (formerly six): Chaewon, Hyunjoo, Naeun, Yena and Jinsol. Somin officially departed from the group on November 9, 2015 due to her wish of continuing with her studies.

History

Pre-debut: Puretty and Kara Project

From 2012 to 2014, former member Somin was a member of the now-defunct girl group effort, Puretty. The group debuted in Japan with the song "Cheki☆Love" and disbanded in 2014 with plans to reform into other groups.[4]

In mid-2014, Somin and Chaewon became finalists in Kara Project, in which seven trainees competed to become the new members of label mates girl group, KARA. They finished in second and fourth place respectively.[5]

2015: Debut with Dreaming, Somin's departure, Boing Boing & Snowman

On February 9, DSP media announced that they will debut a girl group that will be the next generation of Fin.K.L and Kara.[6]

In July 2015, DSP Media announced the members of April through a series of teasers along with the group’s logo and mascot, which was chosen through an open logo contest.[7][8][9] In early August 2015, DSP Media confirmed that April would debut on August 24 with the mini-album Dreaming.[2]

On August 24, April released the music video for their debut album’s title song, "Dream Candy". The same day, the group debuted through Naver's V app through their showcase "April Debut Showcase–Live," during which they released the mini-album Dreaming.[3][10]

On September 11, April released a special choreography music video of their debut album’s title song, "Dream Candy", filmed in downtown Seoul.[11]

On November 9, DSP Media has announced that after long discussions, Somin has made the decision to leave the group. On the same day DSP announced that the group will make a comeback in November as a 5-member group.[12]

On November 14, DSP Media posted on April's official instagram account a picture, in the form of a math test, announcing the group's upcoming 1st Single Album.[13] On November 16, a teaser for the logo of their single Boing Boing was posted on YouTube.[14] On November 17, a group teaser was posted on the group's official instagram account.[15] On November 18, the agency revealed several group pictures, as well as individual photos of the band members, revealing a scout concept.[16] On November 19, DSP Media posted a series of pictures for a second concept.[17] On November 20, the agency posted pictures from the MV filming and revealed that the song promoted by the group would be called "Muah!".[18][19] On 23 November, a video teaser for "Muah!" was posted.[20][21] On November 24, a preview of the two title component "Boing Boing" was revealed.[22] On 25 November, the MV of "Muah!" is posted on the official YouTube channel of the group,[23][24] as well as behind the scenes footage and an interview.[23][25]

On December 10, DSP Media announced that April will released a Winter Special Album titled "Snowman" on December 21, and posted puzzles teaser images the group's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Fan cafe.[26][27] On December 31, DSP Media posted a special choreography music video for "Snowman" on the group's official YouTube channel.[28]

2016-present: Fanclub name, 1st fanmeetings & Spring

On January 18, 2016, DSP Media posted a special Noraebang Version music video for "Snowman" on the group's official YouTube channel.[29]

On January 29, it was announced that the group was planning to hold their 1st fanmeetings in Japan on March 6 under the name "April JAPAN FANMEETING 2016 ~ The First Fairy tale ~" which will be presented by their labelmate and former KARA member, Heo Young-ji.[30] A mini-fanmeeting was also held in Seoul on February 27.

On February 12, 2016, DSP Media announced on April's official website that the group's fan club will be called Fineapple. The agency explained that it's a combination of "Fine" (which they say means "good") plus "Apple", which they state is a shortened form of "April".[31]

On February 18, April won the Girl Group Rookie of the Year award at the "22nd Korean Entertainment Arts Awards", the girl scout concept their used for Muah! was also mentioned during the Award ceremony.[32]

On April 4, DSP Media announced through a teaser poster that the group will make a comeback, on April 27. The poster shows a frame of flowers with texts on the inside and a drawing reminiscent of a butterfly wing.[33] On April 14, it was revealed that the group was set to release their second mini album Spring with title track "Tinkerbell".[34] The song "내 미래의 남자친구에게 (My Future BoyFriend)" was also confirmed to be part of the album. On April 21, DSP Media released individual and unit teaser photos.[35] On April 21, a group teaser picture was revealed.[36] On April 22, the tracklist for the group's 2nd mini album was announced.[37] On April 22, an album preview was posted on the group's official YouTube channel.[38] On April 25, a music video teaser was released,[39] followed by the full music video, on April 27.[40]
