Arbroath High School is a modern six year, all-through comprehensive situated on the west side of Arbroath.

Accommodation

The new building was opened in 1985 and serves the west side of Arbroath as well as the outlying country areas, including the villages of Arbirlot, Carmyllie and Colliston.

The school is built on an attractive site in a residential area not far from the town centre. As well as the facilities normally associated with schools, the high school has priority use during the day of Arbroath Sports Centre containing a full sized swimming pool, squash courts, gymnasium and games hall. The general public make use of these facilities outside school hours. Extensive playing fields are adjacent to the school as well as an all-weather floodlit astroturf pitch.

Admissions

Arbroath High is the larger of two secondary schools in Arbroath, the other being Arbroath Academy which serves the east-end of Arbroath and surrounding areas. Intake is from eight associated primary schools - Arbirlot, Carmyllie, Ladyloan, Colliston, Inverbrothock, Muirfield, St Thomas’ and Timmergreens. A small number of pupils enter from other primaries in the surrounding areas.

History

The school began life as a grammar school but became, and remains, a state comprehensive school. Its old building now houses the Arbroath campus of Dundee and Angus College.

The school faced a scandal in 2014 when the newly appointed rector, Gillian Rew, was suspended due to accusations of misbehavior on a senior residential excursion, an incident reported widely in the media with much pupil and parent backlash in support of the rector. As of September 2015, it was confirmed Rew had been dismissed from her role despite no charges being pressed.[2]

Teaching

The current head teacher of the school is Bruce Pandrich.

At present, the school has an overall staffing complement of approximately 79 in 9 curricular groups, each organised by a Principal Teacher. The groups are: English, Mathematics, Modern Languages, the Sciences, Social Subjects and RME, Expressive Arts, Health Improvement, Technology and Support for Learning. In addition, there is a Principal Teacher (Raising Achievement). Pastoral care is overseen by 5 Principal Teachers (Pupil Care and Support) each of whom works with a team of 10 or 11 tutors in a vertical House system consisting of 3 Houses.
