Sri Lankan academic and physician Professor Arjuna P de Silva is currently the Chairman of Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA).[1][2][3][4] He is also Head of Department of Medicine[5] Faculty of Medicine University of Kelaniya, a Consultant Physician[6] at Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Trainer in Gastroenterology, Chairman of Board of study in Gastroenterology, Member Board of study in Sports Medicine and Member Board of Study in Medicine.[7] He is the Associate Editor[8] of the World Journal of Gastroenterology. He is a Council Member of the National Institute of Education, the supreme governing body vested with the administration, management and control of the affairs of national education.[9] He is also a Council Member of Sri Lanka National Sports Council.[10][11]

Education

Professor de Silva was educated at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where he won sport colours and was Senior Prefect. He was the captain of St. Thomas’ College Rowing Team and represented Sri Lanka in rowing from 1983 to 1984. He subsequently entered North Colombo Medical College from where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. He later obtained a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine 1st in Order of Merit from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo (1997-1999). In 2001 he obtained a MRCP from Royal College of Physicians London and in 2001 gained a MSC from University of Oxford. De Silva was Board Certified as a Specialist in General Medicine in 1999 and Board Certified as Trainer in Gastroenterology in 2008. He was awarded FCCP 2009 and FRCP (Lond) 2010.

Professional experience

Professor Arjuna de Silva is a Consultant Physician and an Academic holding several advisory positions for the Government of Sri Lanka. He was appointed as Head, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya from August 2013. He is also currently Chairman of Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA).[12] Previously he was Director General Institute of Sports Medicine Sri Lanka.[13] De Silva is a Professor in Medicine at Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and previously held the positions of Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Clinical Coordinator at the same university. He was a Consultant Physician (Resident Physician) at the National Hospital and worked in GH Ampara as a Consultant Physician. Professor was employed as a Registrar & Research Fellow in Gastroenterology at Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford.

The Professor has won Presidential research awards 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012.[14][15] Professor De Silva has delivered four orations and many lectures at national and international meetings.[16] He was instrumental in establishing SLADA and introducing new legislation to criminalize trafficking in banned substances. Sri Lanka is among few countries in Asia to have legislation to this effect. Professor De Silva has been at the forefront in the development of sports medicine in Sri Lanka. He was the Director General of Institute of Sports Medicine from 2011-2013. He was the medical provider for the 20/20 Cricket World Cup hosted by Sri Lanka in 2012.[17] Professor is currently an advisor to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.[18] Prof De Silva was the official physician to the Sri Lankan Olympic team at the London Olympics.

Research

He has authored one book (The role of TNF polymorphisms in IBD), two chapters (preparation for endoscopy), colonoscopy. By international publishers, published over 38 papers and 100 published abstracts in international journals.[19]
