The Armed Forces Foundation is an American non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that began operations in 2002 by Jim Gorab, a former Navy engineer, to promote the morale, welfare and quality of life of the military community with a special emphasis on military families.[2]
Programs
The Honorable C.W Bill Young Financial Assistance Fund
The Honorable C.W Bill Young Financial Assistance Fund, named after former Congressman Bill Young, provides direct financial assistance to service members and their families facing financial hardship through injury and other service related situations.[3]
Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST)
The Armed Forces Foundation, in partnership with Southwest Airlines, pays for the team's travel expenses during the season.[4] The team consists of 29 veterans and active duty soldiers with a variety of injuries.[5]
Operation Caring Classroom
Operation Caring Classroom is the foundation's annual Veterans Day education initiative to help increase understanding and support among children for military families across the United States.[6]
School Counselor Program
In 2012 the Infinite Hero Foundation approved a grant for the Armed Forces Foundation to fund an additional school counselor position in Fairfax County Public Schools to support the needs of military-impacted students and their families at Fort Belvoir.[7]
Troops to the Track
Started in 2009, the NASCAR Troops to the Track program (T2T), presented by Bank of America and in partnership with the Armed Forces Foundation, is a year-round recreational group therapy program that honors service men and women, veterans, and military families at races throughout the country by taking them to races and behind-the-scenes events. It is in its fifth year of operation.[8]
Kurt Busch Race Dedications
Starting in 2012, Kurt Busch and the Armed Forces Foundation dedicated races in memory or in honor service members and veterans.[9] As of November 7, 2014 the program has been suspended due to allegations of assault by then girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll.[10]
Books
Hidden Battles on Unseen Fronts
In 2008, Armed Forces Foundation President, Patricia Driscoll, and Author Celia Straus co-authored the book, Hidden Battles on Unseen Fronts, Stories of American Soldiers with Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD,[11] for the Armed Forces Foundation.
The Healing Heroes Book
Commissioned by the Armed Forces Foundation, The Healing Heroes Children’s book, is an educational workbook that serves as a tool for children and families of wounded service members.[12]
