Armor Defense Inc. (previously named FireHost, Inc.) is a cloud computing security provider with headquarters in Richardson, Texas.[1] It focuses on serving clients with data security or compliance requirements, including companies in the healthcare, retail, financial services, and payment industries.[2]

History

Armor was founded (as FireHost) in 2009 by Chris Drake, the company’s CEO.[3] It launched its public cloud in 2011, and since then has raised $59 million in funding, mostly from the Stephens Group.[4]

In 2015, Dell started partnering with the company to offer FireHost’s private cloud service to its customers.[5]

In August 2015, the company changed its name from FireHost to Armor as part of a rebranding. The change in name reflected its shift from solely providing secure cloud hosting (the "Host" in "FireHost") to offering security products that can be used with any hosting provider.[6]

The company has about 200 employees[7] and operates data centers in Dallas, Phoenix, Singapore, Amsterdam, and London.[8]

Services

Armor offers security as a service[6] as well as both public and private managed cloud services.[9] The company differentiates itself by providing high cloud security,[10] and is known for employing cybersecurity experts with military backgrounds.[11]

Armor also offers compliance as a service (CaaS) to help businesses with PCI, HIPAA, and other regulatory requirements.[12] Armor is SSAE 16, ISO/IEC 27001, and PCI DSS Level 1 certified.[13] The company is Common Security Framework certified by the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST).[14]

Security advocacy

Armor is active in political discussions about cybersecurity and online privacy regulations. The company met with U.S. Representative Will Hurd at their Richardson headquarters.[15] The company co-signed a letter to the U.S. Senate opposing an effort by government regulatory agencies to gain more access to customers’ private data.[16] It is also a corporate member of the Cloud Security Alliance.[17]
