Army Air Defence College, a prestigious training institution of Army Air Defence is located on the Eastern Sea Coast of India.The campus of the college is spread over more than 2700 acres of land. In addition to Army personnel, Navy and Air Force personnel including students from friendly foreign defence forces also undergo various courses at Army Air Defence College.The role of Army Air Defence College is to function as a "Centre of Excellence" on all matters concerning Army Air Defence.In 1955 a case was taken up to relocate Air Defence Wing due to lack of adequate ranges for gun and missile firing. In 1979, Government of India sanctioned the establishment of Air defence and Guided Missile School and Centre at Gopalpur .On 1 November 1989 Air Defence and Guided Missile School moved to Gopalpur-On-Sea. Air Defence and Guided Missile School was redesignated as Army Air Defence College in November 1998. In 2008 Army Air Defence Centre also joined Air Defence College at Gopalpur Military Station.[3][4][5]
Infrastructure
The college is equipped with state of the art and latest training equipment.It is equipped with fully functional Coordinate Remote Viewers of USFM, Schilka, Flycatcher and Reporter radars. These Coordinate Remote Viewers are being extensively used to impart real-time training to the entire class Simultaneously.The simulators of Tunguska Gun Missile System and L/70 Gun Systems have been recently installed. Working models, cut sections, sectionised parts and actual parts of the gun systems are available in the ESRs of L/70 and Zu 23 mm gun systems. Nalanda Library is located in a nine storied building where meticulous copies of texts were produced. Chattarpur Lake (20 km) from the college campus is the hub centre for all aqua adventure activities to include Sailing, Water Skiing, Rowing, Water Scooters and Para Sailing.[6]
Gopalpur Seaward Firing Ranges
The College has a Seawards Firing Range where all types of Army Air Defence Weapon System can be fired. Its availability as a part of the campus enables live firing practice to validate the theoretical knowledge imparted. The range has been recently re-notified and extended to 75 km, to facilitate the firing of all types of Army Air Defence Weapon Systems.Target support for various Air Defence Weapon System is provided by indigenously development Inter Services Pilot-less Target Aircraft (ISPTA).[6]
