Its business divisions are Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZs), industrial and distribution hubs, rail and rail infrastructure, forwarding, transport and handling and supply chain technology and management.
History
The company was established in 1999 as BDP India, as a partnership between Ajay S Mittal and the US based logistics provider BDP. In 2006, the promoters acquired a company IID Forgings, which was into forging steel parts. It was subsequently renamed as Arshhiya Technologies International Ltd. It then diversified into the integrated logistics space to offer Supply Chain Management, Warehousing, End-to-end Freight Forwarding, Rail transportation and Software development services. Thereafter, the company acquired Cyberlog Technologies International Ltd, a company engaged in the development of software products and solutions for the logistics sector. The same year, it formed a joint venture - Genco India Private Ltd. with BDP International Inc. and Genco Inc., both US based companies, to foray into the 4PL activities of providing Warehouse Management, Transportation and Distribution to Manufacturing Companies and the Retail sector. In 2007, the company name was renamed from Arshhiya Technologies International Ltd. to Arshiya International Ltd. and it formed a Joint Venture in Oman, Arshiya Logistics LLC, to carry out the business of Air, Ocean Freight Forwarding and Supply Chain Logistics. In April 2008, Arshiya acquired a license to operate a pan-India rail service, giving rise to Arshiya Rail Infrastructure. In the same year the company unified all its offerings under a single brand 'Arshiya'.
Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZs)
FTWZ (Free Trade and Warehousing Zones) is a policy of the Government of India (GoI). It was announced in the Foreign Trade Policy 2004-09 to set up Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZ) to create trade related infrastructure to facilitate the import and export of goods and services with freedom to carry out trade transactions in free currency.
On June 23, 2005, the Parliament of India passed the Special Economic Zones Act 2005 and on February 10, 2006 Government of India notified Special Economic Zone Rules 2006. The Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZ) is a special category of Special Economic Zone and is governed by the provisions of the SEZ Act and the Rules.[1][2]
FTWZ is designated as a deemed foreign territory and are envisaged to be integrated zones and to be used as International Trading Hubs. FTWZs will be fully independent mega-trading hubs integrated with state-of-the-art warehouse and special storage infrastructure, Container Freight Stations, Environment friendly equipment, Rail sidings for hinterland connectivity[disambiguation needed], Commercial complexes for offices, Independent utility stations, banks and insurance corporations added to recreational and eventual residential complex for the FTWZ workforce.[3]
Arshiya's first (FTWZ) at Sai Village, Panvel, Maharashtra, India started operations in 2010. Spread across 165 acres. Its second FTWZ at Khurja near New Delhi spanning 320 acres started operations in January, 2012. Located near the confluence of the planned eastern and western freight corridors, this FTWZ is a part of its 315 acres logistics hub which also includes a 50 acres Rail siding and a 130 acres Industrial and Distribution hub. Free Trade and Warehousing Zone is a Special Economic Zone where trading, warehousing and value addition activities are carried out. FTWZs provide various benefits to Importers, Exporters and Re-exporters like duty deferment, tax incentives, faster regulatory clearances, higher inventory visibility, reduced buffer stocks quality control and value optimization services like packaging, labelling, re-invoicing, assembly, kitting, cutting, polishing and blending.
Arshiya's FTWZs are trading hubs with logistics infrastructure like storage areas, material handling equipments, Container Yards, Customs office, security and surveillance, fuel station and a bank. The warehouses are built by TATA BlueScope, have a 15 metres, height and G+ 6 palletized racking systems, super-flat flooring, ridge ventilations; FSK insulation in the roof and walls; & Material Handling Equipments (MHEs), a Value Optimizing Services (VOS) area and a Mezzanine storage area with temperature controlled HVAC system & optional humidity control. The Warehouses are Earthquake Resistant designed as per Seismic Zone 4 requirements & have a Storm Water Drainage System with a capacity to handle rainfall with peak intensity of 156 mm/ hour or 10 cubic m per sec.
The FTWZ has Container Yards (CY) with Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) flooring for stacking containers in a G+5 stacking system using modern Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes (RTGCs) & Reach Stackers, a Maintenance & Repair (M&R) Yard, Scrap Yard & an Empty Container Yard, Food court, a Medical dispensary with Ambulance at site and an Open & covered Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) Yard with Paver-Block flooring for storage of cargo that cannot be stored in the Warehouses.
The FTWZs technology, communication systems, infrastructure and equipments, has been developed by companies. These include GE Security, IBM, CISCO Systems, Kalmar, BOSCH, Schaefer, Toyota and Voltas to name a few.
Rail and rail infrastructure
The privatization initiatives undertaken in the Rail sector aim to change the Indian freight scenario completely. Since the introduction of the Private Container Train Operator (PCTO) policy in 2006, private players have taken up licenses to operate container trains on the Indian Railways network.
In April 2008, Arshiya acquired a Category I license to operate pan-India rail service, giving rise to Arshiya Rail Infrastructure, which enables the movement of EXIM as well as Domestic cargo to and from any location on the Indian rail network. It has unprecedented rail connectivity across India for large scale evacuation of cargo from Ports, Distribution hubs, Free Trade Warehousing Zones and Customer Sidings. Its loading/unloading equipment, customized containers, dedicated rakes and IT systems are designed to reduce waste and provide real time tracking of cargo which reduces chances of pilferage and ensures updates for clients.
Industrial and distribution hubs
Industrial & Distribution hubs are hubbing zones that help accelerate the movement of goods. Set up at strategic locations in India these zones have warehousing facilities for products and provide access to ports, and the hinterland through freight corridors, by being co-located with Arshiya's rail network and FTWZs.
These consolidation points are designed to process incoming cargo with customized warehousing facilities, cargo handling equipment, manpower and IT services for visibility. It reduces pilferage, loss of cargo and also provides economies of scale in value-optimizing activities like Palletisation, Sheet Wrapping, Assembling and Labeling. It provides services ranging from First and Last-Mile Connectivity, Container Handling and Customized Solutions for customers handling various cargos.
