Arthrex Inc. is a manufacturing company that makes orthopedic surgical supplies. Arthrex began in 1981 as Arthroscopy Excision Instruments Inc. in Munich, Germany.[1] The company moved its headquarters to North Naples, Florida in 1991. Its manufacturing arm, Arthrex Manufacturing Inc. was incorporated in 2002.[2] and is also based in North Naples, Florida. Arthrex companies specialize in surgical supplies for arthroscopic and minimally invasive orthopaedic surgical procedures. More than 6000 such products have been developed by Arthrex and are marketed worldwide.[3] The company also provides educational services for orthopaedic surgeons and their patients.[4] Arthrex provides products and services for the surgical specialities of shoulder, knee, hip, and small joint surgery for human and veterinary markets.[3]

In addition to the Arthrex headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Florida, the company also has subsidiaries in Europe, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, England and France and distributes its products to more than 90 countries worldwide.[2]

Arthrex holds a patent portfolio for its products of more than 294 U.S. patents and additional foreign patents.[5]

History

In 1981 Reinhold Schmieding started a medical device company called Arthroscopy Excision Instruments Inc., which focused on an emerging procedure known as arthroscopic surgery.And the initial investment was $60,000 from Reinhold Schmieding's personal savings .After starting the company, Schmieding didn't make a penny for two years. He ran his company from a fold out table in his small apartment in the Olympic Village.[7]

Later the company was renamed as Arthrex Inc.

Currently Arthrex distributes its products to more than 90 countries worldwide. It has subsidiaries throughout Europe, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, England and France.[8] In 1991 the headquarters is shifted to Naples, Florida from then the company has grown from two employees to more than 150 in Naples, Florida.

By mid 2013 Arthrex has 1,400 employees in Southwest Florida and close to 2,000 employees worldwide. Arthrex was named one of the 2015 FORTUNE “100 Best Companies to Work For®” in the United States. Arthrex was recently named to the prestigious list of Florida’s Top 100 Best Companies To Work For 2012. One hundred companies were recognized in small, medium and large company categories; Arthrex was named 22nd in the large company category. The listing is published in the August 2012 issue of Florida Trend.[10]
