Arthur Canario is a former nationally ranked Judo player and former collegiate football player. Arthur was born in Brooklyn, NY.[2] Arthur would play for Long Island University at CW Post, finishing in 1973.[3] At LIU, he would become an NCAA Academic All American as well Magna Cum Laude.[4] He played offensive tackle at CW Post.[5] He would later attend medical school at Georgetown.[4] He became an Orthopedic Surgeon at St. Michaels Hospital in New York.[5]

Judo career

Arthur started Judo as a result of a Christmas present from his parents.[6] Arthur would participate in the New York Yudanshakai Junior Tournament held in Prospect Park YMCA in 1965.[7] Arthur would participate and place in the 16-year-old unlimited.[7] Arthur was coached by Hank Kraft, who described him as the original kid with two left feet.[4] At his peak, Arthur was a 6'5 220 lb heavyweight.[4] Arthur would be ranked a top 3 Judo fighter in the United States in 1971.[4] He would be the top heavyweight in the United States that year with a win in the national championships with a victory over Charles Hooks.[4][8] He competed in the over 93 kg division and of that years championships was held in St. Louis.[9] That year he would be elected to the US International Team.[10] Due to problems, he was unable to represent the US at the worlds in Germany in 1971.[11] In 2006, he would compete in the World Masters Judo Competition, scoring. In 2008, Arthur would win the USJA Hall of Fame award for Outstanding Male Masters Competitor.[12] Arthur would win the bronze in 2010 at the Grand Master and Kata World Championships.[13] In 2006, he would become a 4th degree black belt in Judo.[5] Arhtur is a firm believer in the importance of Judo in self-development.[14] He is currently active in the New York Athletic Club and represents them in competitions.[5] He currently serves as the President of the World Masters Judo Association.[15]
