Arun Kumar Ahuja (January 17, 1917 – July 3, 1998) was an Indian film actor and producer who was active the Bollywood film industry in the 1940s and early 1950s. He was best known for acting in Mehboob Khan's 1940 film Aurat which was a predecessor of the Oscar nominated 1957 remake Mother India.
Career
Ahuja was brought into films by director Mehboob Khan who cast him in the leading role in Ek Hi Raasta in 1939. In 1940 he acted in Mehboob Khan's Aurat opposite Sardar Akhtar, an earlier version of the more famous Mother India (1957). He acted in many more films throughout the 1940s before becoming a producer in the early 1950s. The one film he produced was a flop and he quit the film industry after his last film Aulad (1954). The losses suffered from his home production's failure resulted in him shifting his entire family to Virar. He lived a reclusive life from the mid 1950s onwards. He stayed out of the media spotlight even when his son Govinda became a star in the mid 1980s. He died in 1998 at the age of 81 of a heart attack.[1]
Personal life
Ahuja was born in pre-partition Gujranwala, Punjab, India in 1917. He married singer and actress Nirmala Devi in 1942 after they were cast opposite each other in the film Savera. He was father to four daughters and two sons. His youngest son is actor Govinda and his other son Kirti Kumar is a former actor and director.[2] He is grandfather of Vinay Anand, Krishna Abhishek, Ragini Khanna, Aarti Singh, Soumya Seth Aryan Singh, Arjun Singh, Amit Khanna and Tina Ahuja.
