Association of Medical Illustrators
The Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) is an international organization founded in 1945, and incorporated in Illinois. The AMI is a global community that promotes the power of visual media to advance scientific understanding, communication, education and research. With more than 800 members, the AMI defines educational standards and ethical practices, provides board certification, and enhances professional development through continuing education and its annual meeting. The AMI publishes the Medical Illustration Source Book (medillsb.com) and the peer-reviewed Journal of Biocommunication (jbiocommunication.org). Since its founding in 1945, the AMI has sought new and better ways to clearly communicate the beauty and complexities of science.
Its members are highly trained interdisciplinary scientists, artists, and creative directors who produce visual communication media that illuminate the science of life. From its historic origins in illustration, the profession has evolved with today's technologies to include molecular and data visualization, animation, digital publishing, interactive media, mobile/web apps, imaging, health gaming, surgical simulation, and virtual reality. Members are involved not only in the creation of such material, but also serve in consultant, advisory, educational and administrative capacities in all aspects of bioscientific communications and related areas of visual education.
The professional objectives of the AMI are to promote the study and advancement of medical illustration and allied fields of visual communication, and to promote understanding and cooperation with the medical profession and related life science professions.
