Australia's Next Top Model, Cycle 9 was the ninth cycle of Australia's Next Top Model. It began to air on 30 April 2015 at 7:30 pm AEST (UTC+10).[2] Like last season Jennifer Hawkins hosted the show. Alex Perry returned as a judge for this season, while Cheyenne Tozzi was added as one of the new co-mentors alongside Didier Cohen, who was also a judge on the previous season.[3][4][5]
The winner of the competition was twenty year-old Brittany Beattie from Whittlesea, Victoria. Among her prizes were a one-year modelling contract with IMG Sydney, a trip to New York City for New York Fashion Week valued at twenty thousand dollars thanks to TRESemmé, a brand new Mazda 2 Genki, as well as being featured in an editorial spread for Elle magazine Australia.[1]
Beattie was selected to walk for guest judge and designer Jean Paul Gaultier in one of his shows during Paris Fashion Week between the filming and airing of the show.[6] She was also chosen for work with Swarovski crystals as part of a casting that took place during the competition.[7]
Series summary
This series saw 12 new contestants with a thirteenth cast member added in as a wildcard contestant. In contrast to the former two cycles there was no casting episode this season. A new scoring system was implemented in the show with models receiving a score on both the challenges and shoots to determine who would go home.[1]
Requirements
All applying contestants were required to be aged 16 to 21 in order to apply for the show. Those auditioning had to be at least 172 centimetres (68 in) tall. To qualify, all applicants had to be an Australian citizen currently living in Australia.
Additional requirements stated that a contestant could not have had previous experience as a model in a national campaign within the last five years, and if a contestant was represented by an agent or a manager, she had to terminate that representation prior to the competition.[8]
Auditions
Auditions were held once in Newcastle, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth. They were held in two different venues in Sydney and Melbourne.[3][9]
In addition to the audition tour, an online selfie competition dubbed 'Australia's Next Top Selfie' was held for models who were unable to show up for the auditions under the premise that 'No stone would be left unturned in the search of Australia's Next Top Model'. Applicants were required to submit a photograph tagged #antmselfie on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. All live audition requirements still applied.[10] The winner of the competition, later revealed on the show to be 18 year-old Zahra Thalari from Sydney, was granted a spot within the final cast.[11][12]
Guest judges
Instead of finding a replacement for the late Charlotte Dawson the show opted to include a special guest judge each week. Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh explained:
"The whole team on the show has been deeply affected by the loss of Charlotte earlier this year. We feel the series will never be the same without her and in 2015 we will welcome a special guest judge each week to join the judging panel as in our minds Charlotte is irreplaceable."[13]
The guest judges for this year included Alessandra Ambrosio, Alexandra Agoston, Alyssa Sutherland, Coco Rocha, Elyse Taylor, Jean Paul Gaultier, Kelly Osbourne, Kim Kardashian, Linda Evangelista, Megan Gale, and Tyra Banks.[14][15][16][17][17]
Episode summaries
Episode 1
Original airdate: 30 April 2015[18][19]
The episode begins with America's Next Top Model host Tyra Banks speaking about the success of the show and dedicating the newest season to the late Charlotte Dawson. Afterwards the twelve selected girls are all driven to meet Jennifer and Alex Perry. They explain that a new system will be used in determining who stays and goes during eliminations. Modeled after seasons 19, 20 and 21 of the American adaptation, the models will be scored on a scale of one to ten for their performance on the weekly challenge as well as the results of their photo shoot. In contrast to the American version, there is no social media voting. It is then announced that the models will have to prepare for their first challenge: a runway show in front of Australia's fashion elite. Didier Cohen and Cheyenne Tozzi are introduced as the model mentors for the show.
Most of the girls do well in the challenge, with Ayieda struggling the most with her heels. Brittany's stress gets the better of her, culminating in a breakdown. The challenge scores are revealed when the contestants move into the top model home the following day. Lucy is revealed to have the highest score at nine while Cassie and Ayieda are tied for the worst at four points.
- Challenge winner: Lucy Markovic
On the day of the photo shoot, Didier and Cheyenne introduce the models to their photographer Gary Heery to create perfect black and white portraits. Before the shoot begins guest judge Alessandra Ambrosio walks into the room to coach the girls during their sessions. Alex, Brittany and Izi are notable standouts. Cassie's disengaged personality puts off the photographer and team on set, while Kaitlyn is unable to loosen up and show range in her photos.
At panel Lucy is the first girl to be judged. She receives lukewarm feedback on her photo and is declared safe with a 28. One by one the girls are judged, shifting their positions in the ranking as they receive their final number. Cassie is the second to last girl called, receiving a total of 22 points and earning the last slot on the leaderboard. Kaitlyn is called forward to receive her critique and is told that if she is unable to place higher than Cassie, she will be automatically eliminated. The judges agree that she appears too timid and unsure. After receiving her scores she falls short by 2 points, becoming the last name in the ladder and the first girl to leave the competition.
- Highest score: Alex Sinadinovic
- Bottom two: Cassie Hargrave & Kaitlyn Bennett
- Eliminated: Kaitlyn Bennett

There they are told that they will have to pair off and be given one hour to choose outfits from the store and head to the streets to find different locations to take the perfect photo. Alex, Izi and Ayieda struggle to gel together as a team, with Izi and Ayieda feeling pressured by Alex. Meanwhile, Alex feels that Ayieda is slowing the team down. Jess comments on Cassie's introverted and quiet personality. Most of the teams manage to get everything done in the allotted time with little problem. After butting heads with Alex, Ayieda decides to sit out the challenge. Izi begins to worry as time begins to run out, having acted as a mediator between the other two girls and failing to have her photo taken. Ultimately all the models are able to have their final picture taken and sent to Kim. Back at home Cheyenne and Didier deliver the news. Kim reviews each photo giving feedback on different elements of each picture. After she is done Izi is revealed to be the winner of the challenge.

For the photo shoot, the girls are all assigned different personas uniquely tailored to their personalities. A handful of girls take on the task without a breeze, among them Lucy, Jess and Alex. Tanahya becomes emotional with her role of Cinderella as it makes her dread about doing badly and having to go back to her life as a housekeeper. Brittany once again struggles with her confidence mentioning that she's unsure about her decision of having auditioned in the first place.
At panel the girls get to meet Kelly Osbourne, who will act as the third judge for deliberation. Ayieda is critiqued for having walked off during the challenge but receives praise for her photo. Phoebe is called up next and receives mostly negative feedback for her photo. As each girl goes forward for critique she is pushed lower and lower on the leaderboard, inching closer to being eliminated. Lucy receives the highest marks from the judges for fulfilling her assigned brief the most, placing her at the top of the ladder. After having done well on the previous week Brittany falls to one of the last slots. Cassie is the final girl to be judged. Having the lowest score so far, Phoebe is called back down. Cassie is told that if she cannot place higher than Phoebe at 24 points she will be eliminated. The judges are mostly unimpressed by her photo, and after receiving her final score, she is unable to meet the minimum total required to stay.
Immediately after Cassie's elimination Jennifer asks the remaining ten contestants to face her once again. In keeping with the week's theme of social media she reminds the models of the selfie competition that took place during auditions, and reveals that the winner of the contest is about to enter the competition. Episode 3
Original airdate: 14 May 2015[22][23]
The girls arrive home from the previous elimination and introduce Zahra to the model home. Several of the girls feel threatened by her physical beauty, waiting to see how she will perform during the photo shoots.
In the morning Jen talks to the girls about the next challenge for the week. The models will be given a budget of $300 to buy clothing and accessories that they will use to style themselves for a red carpet event celebrating the opening night of Jean Paul Gaultier's exhibition. They are told that they will have to face the media and answer their questions. The results of the challenge will be based on how they styled and conducted themselves. The event requires that the contestants fly from Sydney to Melbourne. Brittany and Lauren become excited to be flying back home.
Immediately after landing the girls head to the city to begin assembling their outfits. At the red carpet, Brittany is the first girl to walk in. She receives compliments on her outfit but is unable to pronounce Jean Paul Gaultier's name right away. Phoebe and Alex are critiqued for having used the same top for the event, but are both commended for having handled the situation well. Most of the other girls are given mixed comments of their choice of outfits. Alex and Cheyenne question Lucy's decision to wear a 'bralette' to the red carpet, stating that it was inappropriate. Overall they are congratulated on having handled themselves well and remaining composed for the press. For having done well on both parts of the challenge and embodying elements of Jean Paul Gaultier's brand, Brittany is chosen as the winner. The girls are all given their scores immediately after her win.
- Challenge winner: Brittany Beattie
The photo shoot takes place at hosier lane, where the models are photographed by Nick Leary in Jean Paul Gaultier dresses. Alex reveals that Jean will also be the guest judge at panel back in Sydney. Lucy, Brittany and Lauren all do well. Ayieda once again has problems with her shoes, which aren't the right size, while Jess and Zahra struggle with their confidence.
Brittany is called first for judging and receives high marks from all three of the judges placing her at the top once again. The pressure gets to Jess at panel, where she proceeds to cry. Ayieda is one of the last girls called forward and is given the harshest critique on both her photo and her attitude on set, receiving the lowest total out of the girls who've had their turn at judging. In contrast, Lauren receives the highest marks for her photo tying with Brittany at the top of the leaderboard. Having the lowest score at 22 Ayieda is called down to stand next to Zahra, who is the last model to receive her feedback. After the judges have reviewed her photo Zahra is told that she looks too stiff and needs to practice her angles. All three of her scores are given and she earns a total of 23.5 points. She becomes the tenth name on the ladder, bumping Ayieda into the last slot and eliminating her from the competition.
After Ayieda leaves, Jean Paul tells the girls that he has chosen one of the models to walk for him during Paris Fashion week. The contestant he chose is revealed to be Brittany.

Jess expresses her dismay at having done badly the previous week of the competition, making her determined to do better. The girls are driven to a salon where they meet Jen for makeovers. They are introduced to hair stylist Joh Bailey and TRESemmé senior brand manager Mineli Galiano. Immediately after their makeovers, they will be photographed with their new looks to shoot a TRESemmé campaign in five shots or less. The winner of the challenge will become the new face of a national digital campaign for the brand. Tanahya becomes emotional when her hair is cut, and even more so when it is dyed blonde and damaged. Alex, Zhara and Izi all receive very little change. Phoebe initially only has a little bit of her hair trimmed and her roots re-touched, but she complains about wanting a more drastic change. The stylists proceed to cut a good remainder of her hair, giving her a blunt bob. Jess is given red hair, Lauren is made blonde, while Jordan and Brittany have their hair darkened and trimmed. Lucy's ombre hair is removed and she receives a middle part shoulder cut.
Most of the girls do well for the TRESemmé shoot, but it is Jess who impresses the clients the most with her new look despite being displeased with the red color. She scores a perfect ten when they see their scores the following day.
- Challenge winner: Jess Thomas
The contestants are taken to Bondi Beach to meet with Didier and photographer Travis Grace for a swimwear shoot with male models. The girls are introduced to their mentor for the shoot and guest judge Elyse Taylor. Alex, Jess, and Brittany do really well on set. Izi, Zahra, Lauren, Lucy and Jordan do okay. Phoebe has a hard time finding the right poses and fitting the brief.
Jess is the first model scored at panel and receives high marks from all three judges, getting a total of 35 points. Tanahya is given low scores and begins to cry because she feels that she'll be eliminated. Alex, Lauren, Zahra, Lucy, Jordan and Izi all manage to score above Tanahya. Brittany receives the first 10 of the season from Alex Perry, putting her second on the leaderboard. Phoebe is the last girl called forward. She is critiqued on the lack of strength of her face and failure to connect with the male models to create a commanding photo, as well as relying on her athletic body for her photo. Tanahya, who has the lowest score, is called back down. Phoebe receives a 6 from Jen, a 5 from Elyse, and a 4 from Alex, falling short of the 5.5 required to place above Tanahya's total of 23 and leaving the other models in a state of shock.

The girls are shocked by Phoebe's exit, and Alex feels isolated after losing her only friend and confidant in the house. Meanwhile, Lucy questions Alex's sincerity. Jen visits the models in the mansion and reveals that there will be a double elimination at the following panel. She then explains that for the next challenge, they will be grouped into three separate teams to create a photo in a campaign for Jbronze. Alex becomes weary of working in teams, remembering the problems she had for the selfie challenge some weeks prior. The best photo will be chosen to feature in a digital campaign for the brand, and the winning models will receive a one-year supply of tanning products. The girls are then asked to pick their teams. Lucy immediately picks Jess and Izi, much to Izi's relief after having experienced being in a team with Alex. Brittany quickly chooses Lauren and Tanahya, leaving Jordan and Zahra with no other choice than to work with Alex.

Brittany, Lauren and Tanahya's team give variety in their choice of locations and poses. Lucy, Izi, and Jess also work well as a team. Alex once again takes command of the group. Jordan and Zahra increasingly become frustrated because they feel Alex is only focusing on her own vision and photos. Back at home Jennifer and Didier review each team's best photo. Jennifer likes Brittany, Lauren and Tanahya's photo, but not their choice of background and lack of connection. Jess, Lucy and Izi are praised for their young and fresh image, teamwork and knowing the brand. Brittany and Lauren improve near the end, with Alex struggling to stay in sync.
The first contestants to have their picture judged at panel are Alex, Brittany and Lauren. Linda critiques the three on their lack of coordination as a team. Alex is told she looks disconnected from the group and that her interaction with the other two seems forced. Lauren receives the highest scores out of the group for her outstanding performance. The next group up for deliberation is Izi, Jess and Jordan. They are told they were the most relaxed and at ease during the shoot. Lucy is praised for her animated and warm personality as well as her photo, and is declared safe. Zahra is the next girl to receive her scores and despite improving from the previous two weeks she fails to impress the judges and is eliminated after scoring lower than Alex. Afterwards they are driven to meet Cheyenne, Didier and Miss Shop category manager Vicky in front of the AMP building in Sydney. Their challenge will be to walk in a runway show for Miss Shop in front a live audience while descending a vertical runway 30 meters in the air. The winner of the challenge will be the model who exudes the most fearlessness and confidence, and will receive a Miss Shop shopping spree valued at $5,000 as well as the opportunity of being featured in the S/S 16 Miss Shop launch campaign. During hair and make-up Izi considers bailing on the challenge due to her fear of heights but realizes that it would result in an automatic 0 for the challenge and later decides against it.
Lucy is the first girl to go, and after looking over the edge she immediately begins to panic. After initially deciding not to do go down the runway Didier convinces her to do it. Alex goes down with little trouble and does a good job on the ground as well. Like Lucy, Brittany also struggles at first. Jordan, Lauren and Jess all do fine. In spite of her fear Izi completes the challenge. Afterwards, it is revealed that Alex has been chosen as the winner of the challenge.

The girls will be photographed by Richard Freeman with motorcycles and speed cars zooming past them. The client for the day is Cosmo fashion director Nicole Adolphe, with Alexandra Agoston being introduced as the weekly guest judge.

During judging Alex is critiqued on her lackluster photo and once again on her height. One by one, all the girls are chastised by Alex Perry for failing to deliver. They all receive fives from him.
