Australia 21 is a non-profit organisation started in Canberra in 2001. The organisation discusses some of the issues that challenge the future such as climate change, energy, land and water use, drug reform laws, and the way Australia relates to its neighbours. Australia 21 helps research into various issues by developing networks of serious thinkers and researchers from a range of disciplines and institutions and by facilitating alternative ways of thinking about and responding to the emerging challenges.
Some of the programs Australia 21 has worked on include:
- Pathways to success and well being for Australia's young people
- A sustainable Australia: options for Australia’s energy futures
- Building the services provided by ecosystems into economic accounting
- Resilience and transformation: preparing Australia for uncertain futures
- Australian policy on illicit drugs
- Current impediments to dying with dignity
- The next big questions facing Australia
