Avery is a given name taken from Avery, an English surname that was itself derived from an Old French version of the name Alfred or the Ancient Germanic name Alberich. The meaning of the name is derived from the Old English words aelf, meaning elf, and raed, meaning counsel.[1]

Avery was originally more common as a boys' name, but it is becoming more popular and more common as a girls' name. The name was the 48th most common name for girls born in the United States in 2007 and the 221st most popular name for boys born there in 2007.
