BT Wi-fi is a global wi-fi hotspot service provided by United Kingdom telecommunications company BT Group in partnership with Fon. It was established following a rebranding of the former BT Openzone and BT Fon, bringing both of the services under one name.[1] It supports the BT Consumer division, providing free, unlimited BT Wi-fi for current broadband and mobile customers. It is the worlds largest wi-fi network with more than 5 million hotspots in the UK and another 9 million around the world. It can be accessed in a variety of places such as cafés, pubs, airports, hotels, motorway service stations, city centres and a range of independent businesses who have partnered up to provide its service.
BT Wi-fi hotspots can be found by visiting the hotspot map or by opening the wi-fi settings on your device and scanning for wi-fi networks.
The names broadcast by BT Wi-fi hotspots include:
- _BTWiFi
- BTWifi-with-FON
- BTOpenzone
- BTOpenzone-B
An alternative method of accessing the BT WiFi network is though becoming a FON partner, essentially purchasing a FON WiFi Access Point (AP) through their website you are able to log in to the BT WiFi through this one off purchase. The FON router must be constantly connected to a working broadband connection as you are participating in their community driven free WiFi for all ethos.
Who can use BT Wi-fi?
All BT Broadband customers (including BT Business Broadband) get free and unlimited access to these 5m hotspots as part of their Broadband package, by agreeing to share a small portion of their bandwidth with other BT Broadband customers (via a separate channel on their BT Home Hub).
BT Broadband customers also have access to a further 9 million international hotspots (correct as of Dec 2014) through BT's partnership with FON. BT Broadband customers should use their BT ID or @btinternet.com email address to access BT Wi-fi. BT Business Broadband customers should use their @btconnect.com email address to log in (this can be found in your order confirmation).
Vouchers and subscriptions
Pre-paid vouchers and subscriptions are also available to purchase for overseas or non-BT Broadband customers. Vouchers and subscriptions can be purchased from the BT Wi-fi buy page.
Vouchers are available for 1 hour, 1 day, 5 days or 30 days. Subscriptions offer longer term, unlimited access, with either a 3-month minimum term, or a 12-month minimum term (rolling thereafter).
BT Wi-fi app (for auto-connection)
BT Broadband & subscriptions customers can download the app to get online quickly and easily. The app will save your username and password, and if you have an Apple Inc or Android device it will automatically connect you when in range of a hotspot.
The app is available on Apple, Android, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone devices and can be found by searching 'BT Wi-fi' in your device app store.
The app also has a hotspot map, to help find hotspots when out and about and provide directions to them.
