Baily Bridge

The Baily Bridge is the bridge at the greatest elevation in the world. This bridge is located in the Himalayan mountains, between the Dras River and Suru River, in the Ladakh Valley in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is 30 meters (98 ft) long, and is at an altitude of 5,602 meters (18,379 ft) above sea level. It was built in 1982 by the Indian Army.The first Baily Bridge for civilian purpose was made across river Pampa in Ranni, Kerala; when one of the spans of the bridge across Pampa caved in.This bridge across river Pampa was the sole road link between the northern and southern parts of Ranni town, which has long been the trade centre for various hill produces of Pathanamthitta district. A Bailey Bridge was erected by Indian Armyto facilitate light vehicular traffic in the next two months. A new bridge was constructed parallel to the old one in a record time of 16 months.
