Achievements

Balla U-14’s began their league campaign on the evening of 31.3.2016 by hosting Ballintubber at Nally Park. A fine sunny evening provided both teams with an opportunity to play open football, and they duly obliged. A stiff breeze blowing into the clubhouse goal was availed of when the Balla captain Iarlaith Golding won the toss and opted to play with the wind in the first half.

Ballintubber showed some class to go in leading by two points at the break, and with the wind at their backs they increased their lead by six points before the Balla men decided enough was enough. Iarlaith Golding was awarded a penalty and his first effort was stopped by the Ballintubber keeper but the re-bound was slotted to the net by Iarlaith to signal the comeback.

The Balla backline meanwhile dominated their opponents, Odhran O’Connor, Aaron Bennett and Nathan Kenny putting their bodies on the line to prevent Ballintubber striking the net. Pete Fahey had a solid performance between the posts, while Ciaran O’Connor, Shaun Dempsey and Sean Lyons won scrappy possession to launch much needed Balla attacks. Mid-fielders Dillon Connolly and Gavin Jennings covered the entire pitch to attack and defend in equal measure.

The half forward line proved to be the pointy end of the Balla sword with Matt McCoy taking hard earned points, while Iarlaith Golding got on the end of a perfectly floated ball from Sean Lyons to bury the third goal for Balla who then trailed by one point. Ryan Fadden created opportunities by clever running, with Enda O’Neill, Evan Hughes and Robbie Hetherington keeping the Ballintubber defence busy. Tom Mellett, Noah Thornton, Shane Nally, Patrick Durkan and Jack Flynn all injected fresh legs and created the momentum for the Balla men to beat Ballintubber by the tightest of margins, the final score:

Balla 3-08 Ballintubber 3-07.

Referee: Martin Kennedy.
