Bandsintown is a free live concert discovery app available on Facebook,[1] iOS devices,[2] and Android devices.[3] The app lets fans track their favorite artists and receive email or mobile notifications when they or similar bands are playing in the user’s area.[4] It also allows artists to manage their tour dates in one place and sync them to their websites, blogs and social media sites.[1]

In October 2014, Bandsintown was one of Business Insider's world's greatest apps.[5] The Bandsintown Concerts app has more than 19 million registered users and is available in over 210 countries.[6]

Bandsintown Group was founded in 2004 by Fabrice Sergent and Julien Mitelberg.[6] The company is best known for its concert discovery service but has expanded to service artists, promoters, advertisers and brands.[7]

Brands

Bandsintown Concerts pulls data from a user’s iTunes library, Facebook Likes, Spotify, Rdio, Google Play and Twitter accounts to pre-populate a customized list of tracked artists. It then generates a Concert Cloud that visually represents which of those artists will be performing in the user’s area soon. Music fans see which shows they have RSVP’d to and can share those shows with their friends. The concerts are then synced with their calendar.[8] Tour dates are pulled from more than 200 primary ticket providers and booking agencies, as well as the artists themselves.[9]

Bandsintown Manager is a suite of concert marketing tools for performers that allows them to list tour dates, promote events and facilitate direct contact with their fans.[10] Tour dates loaded into Bandsintown Manager are turned into fully functional Facebook events that artists can sync to their websites and social media.[11] The app is used by more than 300,000 artists including Wiz Khalifa, Lorde, Steve Aoki, Paramore and Maroon 5.[12] Bandsintown sends more than 5 million fans to ticketing sites every month.[4]

Bandsintown Promoter, added in 2014, offers promoters, venues and labels insights and direct access to concert-goers based on their music taste and location in key markets. The platform identifies the number of “Trackers,” or Bandsintown users following a specific artist in certain geographic locations, that can be contacted via Bandsintown’s email marketing program.[13]

Bandsintown Amplified, formerly known as ToneMedia and rebranded in September 2014,[7] is a multi-screen advertising platform that connects brands with fans and artists through a network of music publishers.[14]

In September 2009, Bandsintown released its API to the public, allowing other music sites to integrate its concert listings.[15] Today, the API is used by top companies such as SoundHound, BandPage, Shazam_(service), MAGNIFI, all three major labels, and many independent labels.[16]

Company History

Bandsintown Group (formerly Cellfish Media) is currently led by CEO Fabrice Sergent and President and COO Julien Mitelberg.[6]

Study of Online Music Fans

In August 2012, Bandsintown released the results of a survey it commissioned from the Insight Strategy Group that examined the behavior of online music fans. The survey was completed by 1,800 music fans ages 16–59 who were active Internet users and had paid to see live music in the previous year. The results divided live music fans into five groups (Super Fans, Plugged-Indies, Soloists, Dedicated Diehards, and Tag-Alongs) and found that the most influential groups, Super Fans and Plugged-Indies, are also the most engaged with social media, often visiting Facebook more than once per day and most likely to post about the shows they attend. They also prefer to receive “push” notifications, such as Facebook posts and email blasts about upcoming shows, rather than “pull” notifications from artist or event websites that they need to search out themselves.[27]
