Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir (বাংলাদেশ ইসলামী ছাত্রশিবির), is a student organization in Bangladesh. Islami Chhatra Shibir is the student wing of the Islamist political organization of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.[2][3] Before the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war it was known as Islami Chattara Shangha, and had ties to the West Pakistani army.[4] In 1971, leaders of Islami Chattara Shangha formed the paramilitary group Al Badar, which was involved in the 1971 killing of Bengali intellectuals.[5][6] In February 2014, a US think tank study entitled "IHS Jane's 2013 Global Terrorism & Insurgency Attack Index" listed Shibir as the third largest armed group in the world,[2][7] an allegation that Shibir had both denied and protested.[8]

History

Chhatra Shibir was established on 6 February 1977, at the Dhaka University central mosque. Their stated mission is To satisfy Allah through the rearrangement of the total life of human being in the way given by Allah and shown by the Muhammad.[9] It was known as Islami Chattra Shangha before the Liberation war of Bangladesh.[10]

Overview

According to the group's policy, their activities are launched in light of five agendas.[11]

  1. Dawah (Call to Allah)- Conveying message of Islam to the students and inspiring them to acquire knowledge and to arouse in them the sense of responsibility to practice Islam in full.
  2. Organization- To organize the students who are ready to partake in the struggle for establishing the Islamic way of life within the fold of this organization.
  3. Training- To take appropriate steps to impart Islamic knowledge among the students integrated under the Organization to make them men of character, capable of braving the challenges of Jahilyah and, thus, to prove the superiority of Islam.
  4. Islamic Education Movement and Student-oriented Problems- To struggle for changing the existing system of education on the basis of Islamic values to build up ideal citizens and enhance leadership to solve real problems of the students.
  5. Establishing Islamic Social Order- To strive tooth-and-nail to establish Islamic social order for freeing humanity from all forms of economic exploitation, political oppression and cultural servitude.

Criticism

In 1971, this party was known as Pakistan Islami Chattra Shangha,[10] members of which led the formation of Al-Badr that involved in the 1971 killing of bengali intellectuals and some of them had already been convicted and executed by International Crimes Tribunal.[12][13][14][15][16] Activists of this organization extorted money from the students of many educational institutions, hostel residents and traders of neighbouring areas in the name of Baitul Mal (party fund). Activists of Shibir also pressured the students to sign the supporter's document (form) of the organization as well as join the organisation.[17][18]

This student group was also involved in violent clashes with other student groups,[19] was extremely militant and had been linked to numerous acts of violence.[20] The group had also been linked to a number of larger terrorist organizations both in Bangladesh, and internationally.[20]

Signature killing by cutting tendon

Shibir killed their rival political party members in a special way to spread fear. They cut their opponents' tendons to kill them.[21][22][23][24]

Killing law enforcement force

In the year 2013 Shibir members engaged in a sudden attack on law enforcement forces all over the country. Lots of police members were killed and injured by these armed attacks.[25][26][27][28]

Ranked as third largest armed group in the world

In February 2014, US based defense thought tank IHS Jane published a report titled "IHS Jane's 2013 Global Terrorism & Insurgency Attack Index", where Shibir ranked third as non-state armed groups in 2013.[2][7] The organisation had protested the study findings, strongly condemning the ranking and expressing astonishment.[8]
