Barbara Matera (born 9 December 1981) is an Italian television announcer, actress and MEP for the centre-right The People of Freedom (PdL) party.
Biography
Matera was born on 9 December 1981 in Lucera in the Province of Foggia,[1] in the Apulia, southern Italy. She studied Educational Sciences from the University of Rome La Sapienza, without graduating.[1][2]
In 2000, she was a contestant in the Miss Italia beauty contest.[3] Later, in September 2003,[1] she became an announcer for Rai Uno, the primary television station of RAI, Italy's state-owned national public service broadcaster.[3] She remained with RAI until 2007.[1]
In 2003, she appeared in the film Ma che colpa abbiamo noi, directed by and starring Carlo Verdone. In 2007, she starred in the role of a journalist in the Rai Uno miniseries La terza verità, directed by Stefano Reali. Thereafter, she held the role of Francesca Rossini on the seventh season of Carabinieri, broadcast on Canale 5, and guest starred in an episode of Don Matteo. In 2009, she appeared in the Canale 5 television film Due mamme di troppo, directed by Antonello Grimaldi.[4]
European Parliament election
Matera's candidacy for Member of the European Parliament was presented by Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right political party, The People of Freedom (PdL), in the 2009 European Parliament elections.[5] Her accession to the short list of candidates came as part of an effort by Berlusconi to reshape the PdL's image for the European Parliament elections: "I want young faces, new faces, to renew the image of Italy and the PdL in Europe".[3]
In response to criticism of the initiative, Matera said "I've never been a showgirl", and expressed hope that her candidacy would challenge the "prejudic[ial]" dichotomy about women of intellect versus beauty.[6] She identified Mara Carfagna, Italy's Minister for Equal Opportunity, as her "political role model".[6]
She was elected with 129.994 direct votes in the electoral college of the South.[7]
