Barclays Bank of Zambia, is a commercial bank in Zambia. It is one of the commercial banks licensed by the Bank of Zambia, the national banking regulator.[1]

Overview

The bank is a large financial institution in Zambia, accounting for 17% of commercial banking assets and about 16% of commercial banking deposits in the country in 2012. At that time, Barclays Bank of Zambia was one of the largest private bank in Zambia, by assets.[2] The institution serves the banking needs of large and small business customers as well as individuals, employing over 1,100 people in Zambia.[3] The bank has widest network of Point of Sale terminals which facilitate the use of debit and credit card transactions in Zambia. The bank has also invested in state of the art electronic banking and mobile banking platforms for its customers.

History

According to its website, Barclays Bank has been present in Zambia since 1918. However, the bank was licensed in its present form in 1974. The bank is a subsidiary of Barclays Bank Plc., an International financial services conglomerate, whose shares of stock are listed on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol: BARC and on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol: BCS.

Branch network

As of May 2012, the bank maintains a network of more than 55 branches and 170 ATMs in all provinces of Zambia.

Governance

The Chairman of the ten (10) person Board of Directors of Barclays Bank (Zambia), is Jacob Sikazwe, one of the non-Executive Directors. Saviour Chibiya, serves as the Managing Director of the bank.[4]
