Baron Hillingdon
Baron Hillingdon, of Hillingdon in the County of Middlesex, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom held by the Mills family. This family descended from Charles Mills, a Director of the Honourable East India Company and a member of the Council of India. On 17 November 1868 he was created a Baronet in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom.[1]
He was succeeded by his only son, the second Baronet. He was a banker and Conservative politician. On 15 February 1886 he was raised to the Peerage of the United Kingdom as Baron Hillingdon, of Hillingdon in the County of Middlesex.[2]
When he died the titles passed to his eldest son, the second Baron. He was also a banker and Conservative politician. He was succeeded by his son, the third Baron. He sat as Conservative Member of Parliament for Uxbridge.
When he died the titles passed to his son, the fourth Baron, Charles Hedworth Mills, who died in 1978, the title then passed to his eldest son, the fifth Baron, Charles James Mills who died the same year. The title was then passed to the fourth Baron's Uncle, Patrick Charles Mills. He died two years later in 1982 and the title was succeeded by his great nephew, John Mills who then became the seventh Baron. John Mills died 1996, and the title passed to his eldest son, the eighth Baron.
The Mills family part-owned the London bank Glyn, Mills & Co. and held close business relationships with the Rothschild family.
Glyn, Mills & Co. which had been in private ownership since it was established, was sold amid the late 20th century to The Royal Bank of Scotland. Today, the Mills family owns a diverse range of companies, which include fabrications, childcare centres, energy and leisure. Along with being actively involved with a number of charities for children and the underpriveleged.
Hillingdon Court, built by Sir Charles Mills, 1st Baronet in 1858, served as the Mills family home until it was sold. The family then moved to Dorton House in Kent, which went under a monumental renovation to meet the families requirements. The Mills family presently live at Lound Hall, a large country house near the village of Bothamsall in Nottinghamshire.
