Barrie Wheatley
Barrie Wheatley is an English former footballer who played for Crewe Alexandra F.C.
Biography
Barrie Wheatley was born in Sandbach, Cheshire and was educated locally. From a young age he aspired to be a footballer and was soon playing in the school team. At the age of fourteen he was selected to play for Crewe school boys but broke his ankle the week before. Once he had recovered he signed for Sandbach Ramblers but soon found out he could not play for insurance reasons. Barrie then went on and signed for a local team called Rode Heath who played in the Crewe league. Once he turned fifteen he left school and signed for Sandbach Ramblers again whilst beginning work as a fitter for ERF Motor Works within Sandbach. It was with playing for Sandbach that he was scouted and briefly played for Manchester United junior team and for Liverpool F.C. reserves; it was at Liverpool where he signed Part Time Professional.
Barrie soon found traveling to be a problem so was transferred to his local team Crewe Alexandra F.C. in 1957, where he played 267 league games, scoring 53 goals. His most memorable goal was the winning goal at Chelsea when he scored the winning header to make it 2-1 in the FA Cup.[1] Whilst playing football at Crewe Alex he also served two years in the army where he became a physical Training Instructor and finished as a full Corporal. Barrie was released on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra to Rochdale A.F.C. He subsequently competed in the Cheshire League with Witton Albion F.C., and later played for a number of local teams including Congleton F.C. and Fodens F.C.
