Barry Libert (born in 1954) is a digital board member, technology (angel) investor, and strategic advisor to boards and their leaders seeking to benefit from the digital revolution. He is based in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Libert specializes in social, mobile and big data company investing and advising larger organizations on the impact of these technologies on their business models.

Career

Libert is CEO and founder of OpenMatters,[1] a technology (angel) investor, digital board member and strategic advisor.

1. As a digital and business model advisor, Barry has helped large enterprises, including Deloitte, GE Healthcare, ESPN and Goldman Sachs, pivot their business models.

2. Barry is a Senior Fellow at the SEI Center at Wharton where he researches business models and Leadership styles and publishes for both HBR and Wharton.

3. Lastly, as an angel (technology) investor, Barry sits on a number of start up and not for profit boards (partial list) advising them on leadership styles, value, and business models

Barry began his career at McKinsey & Company.

Publications

Libert has co-authored 6 books on the value of business, financial and social networks. His 6th book, The Network Imperative: How to Survive and Grow in the Age of Digital Business Models, is scheduled to be published at the end of June, 2016, by Harvard Business Review Press.

In 2010, Libert wrote the book Social Nation on the value and power of social networks in organization's. Before that, Barry co-authored ''We Are Smarter Than Me'' with Jon Spector (CEO of the Conference Board), which focused on the power of crowdsourcing. Using a wiki and the contributions of more than 4,500 people, We are Smarter than Me illustrated through practical applications (e.g. the first business book to be written by a crowd using a wiki) how businesses can profit from the wisdom of crowds using today's technologies.[5]

Prior to publishing We Are Smarter Than Me, Barry co-authored Value Rx: How to Make the Most of Your Organization's Assets and Relationships in 2001 about the power of patients, data and new technologies, and Cracking the Value Code: How Successful Businesses Are Creating Wealth in the New Economy in 2000.[6] Both of these books focused on his research into the value of social interactions between constituents of an organization and emerging technologies. He also published the book Barack, Inc, which showed how Barack Obama used social media to win his presidential campaign and the lessons that could be used by business leaders seeking to win the loyalty and support of their customers and employees.

Barry has also authored 20 e-books on the value of social media, mobile devices and big data. His 3 newest e-books, The Social Revolution, The Big Data Revolution, and The Mobile Revolution, focus on what leaders need to know and do in today's digital world. Additional new ebooks are due from HBR press this summer.

Barry's primary focus is the value of new business (network) models. Barry has co-authored 1,100 articles on the importance of digital technologies, value, strategy, and leadership. His articles have appeared in publications such as Harvard Business Review (HBR), the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Baron's, Institutional Investor, CIO Magazine and Mckinsey Quarterly.

Libert has appeared on CNBC, CNN and Bloomberg TV, as well as 100 other local and national outlets. He has discussed how social, mobile and open technologies impact business, government and finical markets. He has also appeared on more than 300 radio stations, including two appearances on National Public Radio (NPR).
