Production

On April 20, 2015, it was announced that Fox Searchlight Pictures had set Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to direct a tennis drama film based on the title Battle of the Sexes, scripted by Simon Beaufoy.[1] Emma Stone was cast in to play Billie Jean King while Steve Carell was to play Bobby Riggs. Danny Boyle would produce the film through his Decibel Films along with Christian Colson through his Cloud Eight Films.[1] On September 18, 2015, Brie Larson was added to the cast to replace Stone for the Jean King role, because Stone left due to scheduling conflicts.[2] On November 18, 2015, Variety confirmed that Stone had closed a deal again to play the role she was previously attached for, as now her scheduling problems were resolved.[3] Danny Boyle would be producing the film through Decibel Films, along with Christian Colson through Cloud Eight Films.[3] On March 3, 2016, Andrea Riseborough was cast in the film to play Marilyn Barnett, the hairdresser and former lover of King until 1981.[4] Following her later that month three more were cast in the film, which included Elisabeth Shue as Riggs' wife;[5] Austin Stowell as Larry King, Billie Jean's husband;[6] and Sarah Silverman as Gladys Heldman, the founder of World Tennis magazine.[7] Four actors joined the cast in April, including Eric Christian Olsen as Lornie Kuhle,[8] Jessica McNamee as Margaret Court,[9] Alan Cumming as Ted Tinling,[10] and Natalie Morales as Rosie Casals.[11]

Principal photography on the film began on April 13, 2016 in Los Angeles.[12]
