Rebbeca Marie Gomez[1] (born March 2, 1997),[2] better known by her stage name Becky G, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress. Her musical style is an integration of pop-rap[3] and Latin pop music genres.[4][5] She gained recognition in 2011, after she posted several videos of herself performing remixes of popular songs on to YouTube. In 2014, Gomez had her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, with "Shower", peaking at No. 16.
Early life
Gomez was born in California, the daughter of Alejandra and Frank Gomez.[6] She is of Mexican descent.[7] Financial struggles forced her family to sell their home and move into the converted garage of her grandparents' house in Inglewood when she was nine years old.[1] Gomez wanted to earn money to help out her family, so began working part-time jobs. Jobs she had included voice-overs and commercials. She also began recording herself in Garageband. Gomez has cited Christina Aguilera, Thalía and Jennifer Lopez as her musical influences.[8]
Career
Career beginnings: G.L.A.M. and B.C.G.
Prior to becoming solo, Gomez used to be part of the girl groups called G.L.A.M. starting in 2009[9][10] and later in BCG.[11]
2011–13: YouTube and Play It Again
Beginning in 2011, Gomez began releasing videos through YouTube, featuring her own lyrics rapped on top of popular hip-hop and pop songs. Songs covered included "Take Care", "Novacane", Straight Up, This Is Why I'm Hot, and "Boyfriend".[12] These songs were to be released on a mixtape entitled @itsbeckygomez, which never surfaced. Her cover of Kanye West and Jay-Z's song "Otis" caught the attention of veteran songwriter Dr. Luke who then signed Gomez to his Sony Music Entertainment imprint label Kemosabe Records. In 2012, Gomez was a featured artist in the singles "Wish U Were Here", by Australian singer Cody Simpson, "Oath", by British singer Cher Lloyd, and the remix version of "Die Young", by American singer Kesha, with Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa. Gomez provided the song "Monster" for the Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures animated film Hotel Transylvania which featured American rapper will.i.am.
On May 6, 2013, Gomez released the video for "Play It Again", which served as the first single from her debut EP Play It Again, released on July 16, 2013.[13] The second single, "Can't Get Enough", featuring American rapper Pitbull was later sent to Latin radio and received heavy rotation, becoming Gomez's first No. 1 Latin Airplay track.
Gomez began representing CoverGirl in July 2014.[14]
2014–present: Debut studio album
On April 23, 2014, she released the first single from her debut album, titled "Shower".[15] The song eventually became her first solo charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at 16. The second single from her upcoming debut album, titled "Can't Stop Dancin'", was released on November 4 of the same year, and peaked at 88 on the Hot 100.
On April 2, 2015, Becky G released her third single from her untitled album, "Lovin' So Hard", produced by Dr. Luke. She premiered the song at the Radio Disney Awards.[16]
In May 2015, it was announced that Becky G and J Balvin will embark on a Co-Headlining North American Tour on September 23 at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, FL. Excluding any concert additions the tour is scheduled to finish at Humphreys Concerts By The Bay in San Diego, CA on October 25.[17][18]
On May 20, 2015, Billboard magazine confirmed that Becky G is set to perform in honor of the late regional singer Jenni Rivera, (who died in a plane crash in December 2012) at a tribute concert titled Jenni Vive (Jenni Lives), held at Marina Green Park in Long Beach, California. The concert is set for July 2, 2015, on what would have been Rivera's forty-sixth birthday.[19]
On June 26, 2015, Becky G debuted a song titled "We Are Mexico" in solidarity with the Latin community in response to Donald Trump's remarks against undocumented Mexican immigrants.[20] On August 20, 2015, Gomez released a song called "Break A Sweat", premiered at Z100 New York.[21] On October 30, 2015, Gomez released a song called "You Love It."[22] That same day, she was cast as The Yellow Ranger, Trini, in a reboot film of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.[23][24]
