The Beebe Plain-Beebe Border Crossing connects Beebe Plain, Québec (a former municipality, since 1995 part of the town of Stanstead) with Beebe Plain, Vermont.
This crossing is best known for being bisected by Canusa Street which runs along the Canada–United States border for almost a half-mile, before emerging between the US and Canadian border stations. Residents on the south side of Canusa Street live in the US as neighbors to folks across the street from them; those neighbours live in Canada.[1] They are prohibited by law from visiting one another without first reporting to border inspectors.
From 1864 to the early 1900s, this crossing was also the site of the world's only international post office, with one postmaster and two doors, one for American customers and one for Canadian customers.[2] That building, built in the 1820s with local granite, still stands divided at 1-3, rue Principale (Main Street) as a private home directly opposite the customs houses.[3]
The historic elements of the US border crossing station were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 as part of a multiple property submission (MPS) comprising 48 border stations constructed between 1930-1943 from an assortment of standard plans. This station has three siblings of similar or identical design, in Sasabe, Arizona, Milltown-Calais, Maine and Union Bridge, Maine.[4]
