Lim Sungbin (Korean: 임성빈; born September 12, 1987), better known by the stage name Beenzino (Korean: 빈지노), is a distinguished South Korean rapper and MC.[1] He is currently under Illionaire Records. Beenzino made his first official public appearance at Dok2's "Hustle Real Hard Concert" on June 5, 2011.[2] Beenzino's name is a parody of American rapper Benzino’s name.[3]

Early life and education

Beenzino spent most of his childhood in Christchurch, New Zealand and moved to Korea before middle school. He went to middle school in Yangpyeong, in Gyeonggi province.[4] After graduating from Seoul Arts High School, he enrolled at Seoul National University to study sculpture and graduated by 2014.[5][6]

Beenzino first gained recognition by posting recordings to the DC Tribe website after becoming more involved in composing hip-hop lyrics. He was also first recruited by Simon D through the DC Tribe website. Beenzino gained further recognition by featuring in albums from Dok2, Epik High, Supreme Team, and Verbal Jint, and his involvement in albums as Jazzyfact (with producer Shimmy Twice) and duo, HotClip (with Beatbox DG).[4]

Career

Beenzino debuted as an MC for P’Skool’s Daily Apartment, a collaborative album with hip hop musician and producer, Primary released July 28, 2009.[7]

By 2011 Beenzino was a respected solo artist as well, though his official debut date still made him a rookie by industry standards.[8]

In 2012 Beenzino released his first solo EP, "24:26." He participated in a nationwide Korean tour with Illionaire Records during the summer of the same year.[9] In October 2012, Beenzino participated in a group project album with Primary in the 2011 album "Primary and the Messengers."[10]Later in November 2012, Beenzino collaborated with label-mates The Quiett and Dok2 in the free track "Illionaire Gang" which was released to coincide with their November 11 "Illionaire Day Concert."[11]

In 2013 Beenzino featured in a K.Will album and Lee Hyori's "Monochrome" album.[12] He also performed at MU:Con 2013.[13]

In April 2014 Beenzino collaborated with Junggigo for the song "Want U."[14] Beenzino performed at the "2014 Asian Music Festival" on May 25 in New York City and "One Hip Hop Festival" at Hongik University.[15][16] He also performed as a featured guest on Verbal Jint's international concert tour.[17]

Personal life

In May 2015, Beenzino started posting and uploading photos of himself and German model Stefanie Michova on various social media thus publicizing his relationship with her.[18]
