Ben Madgen (born 7 February 1985) is an Australian professional basketball player who currently plays for VOO Wolves Verviers-Pepinster of the Basketball League Belgium Division I.
High school career
Born in Williamstown, South Australia, Madgen played high school basketball for Faith Lutheran College[1] in Tanunda, South Australia and was a member of the 2002 state championship winning team.[2] Before heading off the United States to attend college, Madgen was a development player for the Adelaide 36ers during the 2005–06 NBL season but did not manage to appear in any games for the club.
College career
Madgen played four years of college basketball for Augusta State University from 2006 to 2010. Upon completing his college career in 2010, he was the all-time leading scorer for the Jaguars and the Peach Belt Conference with 2,306 points.[3] On 3 March 2010, his No. 1 jersey was retired, making it the only time an active Jaguar player had his jersey retired.[4]
Professional career
Sydney Kings
Following the conclusion of his college career, Madgen signed with the Sydney Kings for the 2010–11 NBL season and subsequently won the NBL Rookie of the Year award.[5][6]
In 2011–12, Madgen saw his role with the Kings increase, and while the Kings finished third-last in the league, Madgen improved his statistics to 13.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. At the end of the 2012–13 season, Madgen was named the recipient the Most Improved Player Award as well as earning All-NBL first team honours.[7]
On 10 October 2013, Madgen was named in the Sydney Kings 25th Anniversary Team.[8]
On 20 March 2014, Madgen re-signed with the Kings on a two-year deal.[9] On 15 May 2015, he exercised an option in his contract in order to leave the club and pursue playing opportunities in Europe.[10]
Belgium
On 14 August 2015, Madgen signed with VOO Wolves Verviers-Pepinster of Belgium for the 2015–16 season.[11]
International career
After being selected in the Boomers squad for the Sino-Australia Challenge against China in June 2013,[12] Madgen sustained a right ankle subtalar dislocation during training only a day after Game 1 of the four-game series.[13]
Personal
Madgen is the son of Gene and Deborah Madgen, and has a brother, Jack, and two sisters, Carly and Tess. Jack currently plays college basketball for Delta State University, while Tess is currently playing in the WNBL for the Melbourne Boomers.[14][15]
In May 2014, Madgen married Bria Kirk.[16]
In his spare time, Madgen is studying a Master of Business Administration.[14]
