Benson Idahosa University

The Benson Idahosa University is a private, Christian university in Benin City, Nigeria.

Benson Idahosa University is named after Archbishop Benson Idahosa, a Charismatic Pentecostal minister from Benin City, Nigeria, and reflects his evangelical beliefs. The president of Benson Idahosa University is the son of the late Archbishop the Rev. F.E.B. Idahosa II, a minister of the Church of God Mission founded by the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa.

Benson Idahosa University is fully accredited by Nigeria's higher education accreditation body, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and was ranked 2nd among private universities offering undergraduate degrees in the country by the NUC in their 2005 national ranking..

On 26th May 2015, a riot broke out in the school campus as a result of the death of 19 year old Yves Justin Ukwu a 200 level international relations and diplomacy undergraduate student of the university who was neglected at the university's medical centre, which raised questions about the health care delivery in place. On the 2nd of June 2015 the university publicly disclosed that their Health Management Organisation (HMO) - Marina Medical Services Limited to whom they had leased the health centre, had failed them and did not do everything to save Justin's life. This revelation by the university's authorities led to questions raised on why Benson Idahosa University engaged the services of Marina Medical Services Limited and the criteria used for HMO selection. The university has terminated the services of Marina Medical services but a lot of questions remain unanswered. The subsequent actions of Benson Idahosa University has brought to light the scourge of medical negligence in Nigerian institutions, the unhealthy relationship between University authorities and HMO's, and the cavalier attitude of university authorities to loss of life.
