Hoover City Schools is the public school district serving the city of Hoover, Alabama within the Birmingham, Alabama, metropolitan area. As of 2012, there are currently 17 schools in the system: 10 elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, one intermediate school, and one alternative school, with a student enrollment of 13,170.[3] The system will likely continue to grow rapidly along with the city of Hoover. The district is overseen by the Hoover Board of Education.

History

Hoover City Schools were founded in 1988. Hoover City Schools started with four elementary schools (Bluff Park, Shades Mountain, Rocky Ridge, and Green Valley), one middle school (Gwinn), and one high school (W.A. Berry).[4]

In December 2014, the Hoover school board expected Andy Craig, the superintendent, to resign.[5]

Awards

Spain Park High School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008. It also received the National Lighthouse Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Award that year, making it the only school in the U.S. to have received both Blue Ribbon awards in the same year.
Both Hoover High School and Spain Park High School have always ranked in the top high schools in the nation.[6]
Hoover City Schools was featured in a Dell educational technology video which was filmed in several district schools in April 2012.[7]

Athletics

Hoover High School's teams are known as the Buccaneers, or the Bucs, and Spain Park's are known as the Jaguars, or Jags. MTV's series Two-A-Days was about Hoover High School's highly ranked football program, and Spain Park was also featured in the show as the schools are arch-rivals.
Hoover High has won over 40 championships in 20 sports. It is considered to be on the edge of joining an elite group of high school athletic programs with Punahou in Hawaii, Mater Dei in California, Eden Prairie in Minnesota, and Randolph in Wisconsin.
The newer Spain Park High School, opened in 2001, has nine state championships in five sports.
