Craig Michael Wiseman (born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi[1]) is an American country music songwriter. Active since the late 1980s as a songwriter, he has had his songs recorded by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes,[2] and several other acts. He has written over a dozen songs that have peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs music charts, and has won a number of industry awards. In 2009 he was named "Songwriter of the Decade" by the Nashville Songwriters Association International.[3]
Early life
Craig Michael Wiseman was born and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in.[1] He began playing music while still a child, and later began playing drums professionally.[1] He moved to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a songwriting career.[1]
Music career
Early songwriting
At age 24 he had his first chart success with the track "The Only One" from Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl album. In 1990 Wiseman was signed to Almo/Irving Music, where he wrote a number of hits.[1] In 1997 he was named "Writer of the Year" by both Music Row and the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).[1]
He signed to a new publishing contract with BMG Music Publishing in 2000. During his three years at BMG, he wrote or co-wrote 22 singles, among them "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" with British pop star Beverley Knight.[1] In 2002 Billboard magazine named him a 2002 Top 2 Country Songwriter.[1]
Big Loud Shirt
He opened his own publishing company in the fall of 2003, calling it Big Loud Shirt.[3] The first hit single in their catalog was "Live Like You Were Dying" by Tim McGraw in 2005, which won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and was named NSAI Song Of The Year, CMA Song of the Year, and ACM Song of the Year. [1] An overseas branch of Big Loud Shirt was later opened in London, and Wiseman also started Big Loud Bucks, an administration and information company.[1] He has written many of Big Loud Shirt's hit singles, and three of his compositions won awards for being among the most played songs of 2007: Rimes' Top Five hit "Something's Gotta Give", Chesney's Number One hit "Summertime", and Brooks & Dunn's Top 20 "Hillbilly Deluxe".[4]
ASCAP named him Songwriter of the Year in 2003, 2005 & 2007.[3][4] At their 2009 awards ceremony, the NSAI named Wiseman the Songwriter of the Decade,[3] and he was nominated at the 2012 Grammy Awards for his role as producer on Red River Blue by Blake Shelton.[3]
Recent years
As of 2014, Wiseman has had over 300 cuts and 100 singles, and twenty four No.1 hits on the radio charts.[3] He is on ASCAP's Advisory Board, the Academy of Country Music Board Of Directors, and the Executive Board of the Nashville Songwriter's Association International.[1] in the fall of 2014 Wiseman received the Heritage Award at the ASCAP awards in Nashville as the most performed country songwriter of the first 100 years of ASCAP, making him ASCAP songwriter of the century.
Authorship, film
Wiseman has published a number of books; his first, Live Like You Were Dying, was at the top of the New York Times bestseller list in 2004.[3] He later wrote a follow-up journal to the book, which turned into a worship campaign used in American churches.[3] In late 2007 he appeared on the reality TV show The Hitmen of Music Row, on Great American Country.[3] Written to coincide with the release of the Faith Hill single of the same name, he released A Baby Changes Everything in 2008.[3]
