Birth.Eater is Oceana's second studio album, recorded by Cameron Mizell at Chango Studios in Casselberry, Florida. It is the first Oceana album featuring lead vocalist Brennan Taulbee and drummer Denny Agosto.
The album uses numerous Christian references and explores topics such as abortion ("The Abortion Plan," "In Birth," "The Family Disease") and the trials of faith (as in "I Came as Dust"). The album is frank and explores Taulbee's traumatizing experience learning that his mother tried to abort him before he was born, but he survived. The album deals with his attempts to forgive her and move towards a positive mental state while constantly being held back by themes of loneliness ("The Spine Collection", "Breather II"), self-hate, and dying. The album is one of the first post-hardcore releases to feature heavily ambient, brooding atmospheres that were seen in later bands.
