Bishop's Castle Town F.C.

Bishop's Castle Town F.C.
Full name Bishop's Castle Town Football Club

Bishop's Castle Town Football Club are an English association football club based in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire. They currently play in the Mercian Regional Football League Premier Division however until 2010, they played in the Welsh Montgomeryshire Football League before leaving due to a Football Association of Wales rule against non-Welsh teams playing in affiliated leagues.[1]

History

The club was founded in the 1880s and played in numerous leagues through its existence. In 1986, Bishop's Castle joined the Montgomeryshire Football League in Wales despite being an English club. They played continuously in this league until 2010. In 2010 the Football Association of Wales banned geographically non-Welsh clubs from being members of league affiliated with them, which prevented Bishop's Castle from being able to be promoted to the Mid Wales League.[2] Following being denied promotion from the Montgomeryshire League twice owing to their location in England,[3] Bishop's Castle started to play in the English Shropshire County Premier Football League and later the Mercian Regional Football League. In 2016, following a legal challenge, Bishop's Castle declared their intent to rejoin the Welsh league system in time for the 2016-17 season owing to longer travelling times in the English leagues and the precedence of their associate membership of the Football Association of Wales.[2]

Youth and Womens

Despite the men's team leaving the Welsh football league system, a number of Bishop's Castle Town's teams still compete in Welsh competitions. The youth teams of the club still remain a part of the Football Association of Wales and play in the Mid and North Powys JFL.[4]
