Block N Load is a sandbox building and tactical first-person shooter video game developed by Jagex for the PC.
Gameplay
Block N Load is a 5 vs. 5 team-based FPS shooter similar in style to a combination of Minecraft and Team Fortress 2.[1]
The inclusion of sandbox construction elements enables players to construct defensive structures or dig trenches, among other options, to achieve the goals of the game mode.
After moving from beta to version 1.0, previously free characters ("heroes") became locked and could be purchased with ingame currencies, either gold or platinum. Players get gold from playing matches or from resetting challenges, i.e. kill 10 enemies in single match or break 1000 blocks in up to 3 games. Platinum can be purchased with real money. There are however free rotation of 3 different heroes for everyone to play, with one changing each week.
Characters
- Sarge Stone - Wields a rapid fire M60 machine gun and rocket launcher that can clear a path. The character's design was inspired by John Rambo from the Rambo film series.[2]
- O.P. Juan Shinobi - Fights with a katana and ninja stars that do extreme damage and a bleed.[2]
- Nigel Purdey-Longshott - A big game hunter with his long range high powered rifle and equipped with his revolver.[3]
- Antony Tony Turretto - Equipped with a close quarters shotgun and repair tools for blocks and turrets.[4]
- Cogwheel - Wields a rapid fire rotary cannon and mortar volleys to eliminate enemies.[5]
- Doc Eliza Doolally - Produces corrosive acid and AoE gas clouds of death and a miracle cure.[6]
Each character has an inventory of different block types they can place, from bounce pads, respawn points, turrets, bombs sandbags and more. Each one is also gifted with one passive and active ability, for example, ninja can passively climb walls and eliza can use her "miracle heal" to instantly heal all allies nearby, including herself.
On 15 May 2015 Jagex introduced the first free hero to the game, Astarella, who comes with a handful of unique weapons, an Orbital Strike Beacon block, and the ability to double jump.[7] Also on the same date update 1.3 "Sweet Science" was implemented.[8]
Release and reception
The game has an aggregated critic review score of 74 on Metacritic with user score of 8.3, citing generally favorable reviews.[9] Over 2,000 reviews have been posted on Steam in the first month alone with an average score of 76 mostly positive.[10]
A Free to Play demo of the game was launched on 15 May 2015.[11]
Awards and accomplishments
