Blue Lambency Downward is the third album by Kayo Dot, released on Hydra Head Records in May 2008. After much of the group leaving to pursue outside projects, they were left with only two members in the group, frontman Toby Driver and long-time collaborator violinist Mia Matsumiya. Despite this, they began recording in early 2007, utilizing a revolving door of contributing musicians. Due to the wide amounts of collaboration on the album, the album is heavily influenced by chamber music, orchestral music, jazz and features an abundance of woodwinds. It is widely considered to be Kayo Dot's least heavy album to date. It was received to mixed reviews, with Pitchfork Media criticizing the lack of memorability of the album, giving it a 3.3 out of 10. Lambgoat gave it a 6/10, as well. But Allmusic and Sputnikmusic were much more favorable, both giving the album a 4 out of 5 and celebrating the diversity of the music. Drowned in Sound gave the album a 7 out of 10.

The ensuing tour featured a mostly new group of musicians, Patrick Wolff on woodwinds, Daniel Means on woodwinds and guitar, David Bodie on drums and Terran Olson on woodwinds and keyboards. Much of the lineup would stay the same for the release of Coyote.
