Bob Martens

Bob Martens (born 1961 in Eindhoven) is an architect and associate professor specialised on simulation and interior design.

Life

Martens studied architecture and urbanism in Eindhoven and Vienna (graduation 1984; doctoral degree 1987) and has been working at the Institute of Architecture and Design at Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) since 1988. A particular achievement was the realisation of the first Austrian “Full-scale Experimentation Lab”. This is a simulation environment for the life-size testing of spatial constructions and designs. In this context Martens has been propagating and developing design exercises for students characterised by a close rapport to future users and the representatives of a broad range of interest. Martens is a keen proponent of an effective dialogue between the analogue and digital spheres. The virtual reconstruction of (Viennese) synagogues represents a research focus in this respect. With the foundation of the Continuing Education Center in 2005, which established an umbrella institution for continuing education at Vienna University of Technology, Martens received an additional working field (deanery of student affairs). He particularly promotes the further development of real-estate related training courses in his capacity of academic course director.
