College career

In college at the University of Southern California, Svihus was a 1964 All-Pac-10 tackle.

Professional career

Svihus was also drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 1965 NFL Draft, but chose to sign with the Oakland Raiders. Svihus was a starting left offensive tackle for the AFL's Oakland Raiders from 1965 through 1969, missing only 1 game. After the AFL–NFL merger, he continued for the NFL's Raiders in 1970, but was no longer a starter, starting only 1 game out of 13, replaced at left tackle by Art Shell, a Hall-of-Famer. He ended his career as a replacement with the New York Jets between 1971 and 1973.

Author

Svihus co-wrote a book with Wayne Hawkins (Oakland Raiders offensive guard) and Dave Dalby (Oakland Raiders center) called Raider: How Offensive can you be? A 25-year history of the Oakland Raiders. The book is published by Peninsula Publishing in Monterey, California. The book was written in 1986-1987.
