Boivin is a surname from France. Most common in the Bacquerville of Normandie and throughout North America due to immigration. Boivin is a combination of the words 'Boi' and 'Vin' from French which mean drink and wine respectively. The surname does not necessarily refer to someone who drinks wine but rather a place, i.e. a place of good wine (similar to the way the Vikings called North America Vinland, or land of good wine). The surname dates back to before the Frank invasion of what is now France. It comes from Gaul and is actually Gaellic in origin.
