Bonifaciu Florescu
Bonifaciu Florescu (May 14, 1848 – December 18, 1899) was a Romanian literary critic, poet and translator.
Born in Budapest as the illegitimate son of Nicolae Bălcescu and Alexandrina (Luxița) Florescu, he attended Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, obtaining his baccalauréat in 1868. In 1872, he graduated from the literature faculty of the Academy of Rennes. He obtained a professorate at the department of world literature within the literature faculty of Iași University in 1873, but was dismissed after a year by Titu Maiorescu. He then became a history teacher at Saint Sava High School in Bucharest. He also taught French there, as well as at Mihai Viteazul High School, at the military high school and at the Saint Nephon seminary. A liberal anti-Junimea detractor of Maiorescu and Mihail Eminescu, he was attacked by the latter in the 1876 poem "Epistolă deschisă homunculului Bonifaciu".[1]
Among the publications to which he contributed were Românul, Tranzacțiuni literare și științifice, Revista contimporană, Stindardul, Duminica, Revista albastră, România orientală, România Literară, Nuvelistul, Revista literară, Vestea, Peleșul, Analele literare, Literatorul, Povestitorul and Biblioteca familiei. He founded two publications, Portofoliul român (1881-1882) and Biblioteca omului de gust (1884), and headed Țara literară review. He authored articles and studies (Etiam contra omnes, 1875; O sută de adevăruri, 1875; Studii literare, I-II, 1892-1893) and poetry collections (Quelques vers, 1877; Sanguine românești, 1889; Ritmuri și rime, 1892; Aquarele și poezii în proză, 1894), as well as translations from the French press and European folklore.[1]
